I have used them many times. I would use one to form a grinding wheel for forming a shape on a mould of die which was hardened previously or for forming a cutter shape to cut a shape. I have also used one on a cylindrical grinder to grind a pin or shaft to form a snatch or mould shape ie moulds for seals and O rings. David |

Thread: Greetings |

Hi Tris as a retired toolmaker a while ago I was given a class in jewelry making as a present. It has enabled me to make things I had never thought of like my granddaughter had to make a bracelet for a project at school and having milled a jig to hold it in while she stamped a pattern was one thing that stood out or sticking some pieces of amber to a piece of metal on the lathe so it could be turned to shape and polished. Perhaps the workshop tooling could be usefull to you eavan making special tools for punches etc.

Thread: Lithium vs PTFE grease |
02/03/2023 07:20:46 |
You should not use grease on a slideway. The best is slideway oil which gives the corect wear resistance and not collect swarf and dust etc as grease will. Any oil would do but not grease unless specified like rotary or linear bearings. David |
Thread: Roll Your Own... |
01/03/2023 08:27:49 |
I have used these rolls for making wheel axels on a capstan lathe perhaps 50 years ago. They produced a stronger thread and once set very rarely needs alteration. The rolls lasted months with continuous production runs of thousands per week. David |

I wonder if there is a problem with the gearbox or drive system. With the power off try and rotate the chuck by hand and see if it drives the motor. Then change the gear to other ratio and try again, will the motor turn in this as well. David |

You can use an aluminium or copper washer. Check diamiters and thickness. Easy to turn on a lathe. David |

Hi Gareth welcome to the forum. As another factory service manager to another you usually work your way round problems and have seen silly things done in the name of speed etc. What factory did you work at. I worked in a toolmaking factory which was part of a group in the Delta plc. Now retired, I still get the occasional call can you just! but I make a few things in the garage. David |
Thread: Nut sizes imperial measurements, disorientation! |
24/02/2023 08:05:20 |
I have a large poster like sheet hanging on the wall in my workshop. It came from Tracy Tools and is invaluable as one side has all the inch, imperial and metric sizes and on the other is all the usual thread sizes pitches and taping sizes etc. My one was from a exhibition where they were selling tooling, somthing like this is invaluable I don't know if they sell them perhaps worth a call. Thread: A Carbide Query |
18/02/2023 16:53:37 |
Hi Michael these look like pieces we silver soldered on to steel shanks to make special cutters for turning and boring. DON'T use them as packing as they will likely crack and break. In the good old days there were not so many shapes and sizes of carbide cutters so we made our own. Sorry but I can't remember the grades but I only remember three grades then. David |

Thread: Carbide end mills in a hobby machine? your experiences please. |
06/02/2023 08:28:44 |
Somtimes you get cast iron with chilled spots which can easily machine with carbide cutters. Recently I repaired a casting by brazing a piece on and the line next to the join was very hard but cut well with a carbide endmill and I have a small 25mm diamiter tip cutter which can remove surface hardness.

Thread: Mild Steel, What do I use? |
06/02/2023 08:03:14 |
Hi Martin steel 4141 is not listed here and you should forget that. The easyer to machine steel is EN1A and EN1A PB The first is a straight mild steel and useful for general parts and the second is straight mild steel but with added lead which makes machining easier but has some draw backs if you are to weld etc. You should mark all materials you buy to identify whst they are. I stamp the ends and write down the length with s marker unless it is small diamiter which I use a piece of white insulation tape with info on like a flag. Other steels for other jobs when you need them. Don't forget other materials come in different standards like brass and bronze and the diferent aluminium alloys for diferant jobs. Always mark what they are eavan small useful pieces. David |
Thread: Do many people run 2 Milling Spindles |

I ran my spindle to engrave a dial and the spindle was getting very hot so decided to make an engraving spindle mounted to one side of the spindle. David |
Thread: Lathe Change Wheels |
03/02/2023 20:41:26 |
David I have just made some gears from Acetal and they were easy to machine and seem to be very strong and stable. The machining and gear cutting was so easy compared to cast iron and a lot quieter running.
These are for a tumbler reverse. David |
