Thread: NVR Issues

It sounds like a wireing problem with the NVR switch. On some switches you hsve to put in a link from live to coil power and it is possible the wire has a break inside insulation. Check wiring diagram and wires end to end.

Thread: Case Hardening Push Rod Ends
21/07/2023 08:05:08

I used to make replacment push rods for Triumph and BSA bikes from silver steel ends with aluminium rods. The cup end was drilled and finnished with a ball end milling cutter then the other end was drilled and bored flat bottomed to take the alloy rod which was to be locktited on after finnishing. The ends were hardened by heated in a furnace to temp 860 -900 deg C. Wrapped in a stainless steel foil wrapper to prevent scale forming then quenching in oil to harden. They were then re-heated to about 280 deg C and quenched in water to temper them back to hard but not brittle state. A quick polish and clean before assembly. We made small batches of 20 to 30 at a time.

I have just had a thought. You can get over sized rollers to replace the original rollers in the bearings. You could get the bore re-ground to clean up then order oversized rollers to fit.

Thread: M3.5 thread with 1mm pitch, very non standard

Hi Ian I have made special taps mainly for cutting metal parts but the same could be done for your wooden part.

I screw cut the thread on a piece of silver steel , then using a ball nosed cutter cut the cutting edge. It was then flame hardened. 20191012_115556.jpg

These were similar items I made for a friend but made from bronze for an unknown musical instrument.

Hi Andrew welcome to the forum. There are some smaller 4 jaw chucks at Rotagrip shop but yiu may hsve to make an adaptor plate to change from 3 hole to 4 hole mounting.

I would use Locktite 620 retainer as that is designed to retain bearings etc with high strength and high temperature. You fit it with a slight clearance to allow the Locktite to work on a very clean surface so clean it very well with a solvent cleaner first. You don't have to allow for press fit just size on outside and slight clearance of a couple of thou but check the Locktite web site for details. I used it on parts in a plastic mould where it was heated by the plastic and loaded with a pin which had a rotary pull on the part in question.

Hi Bazyle my knob is brass. I just thought a brass knob would look well instead of cast iron on the drawing and it pollished up easily with a quick rub ocasionaly. I also adjusted the shape to suit my whim.

Thread: Repair a small cast bell
03/07/2023 07:35:11

This is a repair using bronze brazing rod on a cast base of a steam engine.

It was heated a bright red heat and used Sifbronze flux. It was filed up afterwards and you couldn't see the repair after painting.

Thread: Measuring concentricity errors
01/07/2023 23:08:41

When needing concentric holes you should bore both diameters as drilling can wander a small amount unless you have bored the hole near to size and finnished it to  size eith a drill on the same setup and without moving the parts.

Have a look on here.

First forge one end clean up with wire brush then heat bar fit through screw end, ( which was also forged then drilled ) and forge the second end in situ and wire brush for finnish.

Thread: Small Milling Machines
28/06/2023 07:17:30

Hi Grant welcome to the forum. There are many small mills about but you should look at ARC https://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/ or have a look at Chester hobby store. https://www.chesterhobbystore.com

The drive for your boxford lathe I think should be fairly easy, there are many makes and if you look here https://inverterdrive.com/Contact/ you shoukd get an idea of costs involved and that have downloads of how to install a drive and set up for free. There are other supliers around as well which may be cheaper but they can help with most queries on the phone or email.

Welcome to the forum Rob. Have a go at making a simple wobbler steem engine as you still have to get used to machining on the lathe milling and tolerances etc. I started one a while ago which by adding a boiler firstly then a small generator had to have a lamp post to light.

It s sounds like you have a non conforming plug.

Counterfeits and non-standard plugsEdit

Plugs which do not meet BS 1363 often find their way into the UK. Some of these are legal in the country they are manufactured in, but do not meet BS 1363 – these can be brought into the UK by unsuspecting travellers, or people purchasing electrical goods online. They can also be purchased through many UK electrical component distributors. There are also counterfeit plugs which appear to meet the standards (and are marked as such) but do not in fact comply. Legislation[18] was introduced, with the last revision in 1994, to require plugs sold to meet the technical standard. Counterfeit products are regularly seized when found, to enforce the safety standards and to protect the approval marks and trademarks of imitated manufacturers.[61] The pressure group PlugSafe[62] reported in March 2014 that since August 2011 "thousands" of listings of products including illegal plugs had been removed from the UK sections of the websites eBay and Amazon Marketplace. The UK Electrical Safety Council expressed shock at the magnitude of the problem and published a video[63] showing a plug exploding due to a counterfeit BS 1362 fuse. The Institution of Engineering and Technology also published information on the extent of the problem with on-line retailers, many advertising replacement cord sets, mobile device chargers, and travel adaptors fraudulently marked BS 1363, and mentioning the same sites.[64]

Thread: Warco WM14 Z-axis power drive?
24/06/2023 07:23:13

Hi Greg I found reaching the back handwheel on my Chester champion 16v with same set up. I made a 90 deg handwheel with bevel gears and a motor on the end of the leadscrew which I replaced with a ball screw. There is an artical about it a few years ago on here.
