Hi again. My lathe has a square thread for all axis traverse, cross slide and compound slide. No problems with my lathe accuracy so personally I would just keep it as us as long as there is no excessive play. Made in about 1950 a Myford. David |

Thread: Bridgeport used spares |
25/09/2022 16:16:26 |
If I remember there is a plastic bush in the varidisk disks. I have in the past tried to bronze bush these but gave up and bought plastic replacements. Also I had the shafts metal sprayed and ground by a local company. David |
Thread: Sawing Plate |
25/09/2022 09:18:50 |
I have a Clarkson vertical band saw which is meant for woodwork and it is ok with a metal cutting blade to cut brass, copper and aluminium but it is too fast for steel, iron, stainless, and many other ferrous materials. I have never used a coolant or cutting oil ad the drive wheels have a rubber tyre which will be adversely affected by them. David |
Thread: Levelling the mill - is it worth it? |
22/09/2022 20:22:32 |
If you have a levelled machine you can use a level or angle setting device clinometer etc on a job which has no way of using the bed to work off. If you are using coolant it should run off the correct way if the machine is level. David |

Thread: Cousins UK |

I Have ordered regularly from Cousins. They always deliver promptly and only once when a rolling mill I had ordered had a faulty roll which had been unfinished by the manufacturer was delivered. They allowed me to get it finnished turned and paid the bill from the company round the corner to 're machine the roll and returned money back to me the same day. David |
Thread: cable core colours for 3 phase motors |
18/09/2022 17:23:38 |
I have used SY cables for many power supply connections and are my preferred connection cable especially where there is possibility of movement. There are many sizes of cable with many numbers of cores but all have an extra layer of protection with a braided steel sheaf in the middle which is earthed with the correct cable gland as extra protection and the cable is not affected by oil etc. Every core is numbered its full length and it is easy to attach a rubber or shrink tube sheaf to each core if you wish to code by colour. Thread: Workshop Machines - How Big is Too Big? |
18/09/2022 17:08:35 |
Hi this is one machine I helped install at the factory I worked at. 17 tons in weight. it was not the largest machine I had installed but they came in parts to assemble on site. we had to remove the roof and there was only 50mm clearance between the steelwork. David

Hi Stuart welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have a fair sized workshop to work on larger items most members work on scaled down models but there is a wealth of information on here if you ask. David |
Thread: Face mill decission |
17/09/2022 07:43:48 |
What mill are you wanting using the large face mill on and what material are you cutting on it as it us easy to overload a small mill. It is possible to use a fly cutter to get a nice finnish with less load. David |
Thread: Myford or any other adjustable rear parting tool |

Thread: Wrong colour top on milk containers |
06/09/2022 11:07:43 |
I am perplexed as I now have to read the label on my milk container as the colour has changed. The milk we received this week has the same colour as the body ie made of same material. After putting skimmed milk in my coffee, my wife's, instead of proper full milk, I now have to read the labels to make sure I don't poison my self with adulterated milk. David |

Hi I just had a look at the original parts for my mill. It has a long nut and grub screw. To adjust the thrust bearings on the z Axis you unscrew the grub screw a little way then tighten the long nut till there is no play then holding the long nut still with a spanner and tighten the grub screw to stop the nut unscrewing. If you do it this way you don't overtighten the thrust bearings and the nut won't unscrew and you could use s socket to drive the z Axis. David Edited By David George 1 on 06/09/2022 10:05:46 |

Hi Shugs. I have already done a power conversion and side handwheel with bevel gears. I fitted a ballscrew as well as the motor drive. If you want the drawings and info I can send them if you wish.
