Thread: Tich cylinder use |
30/06/2020 19:29:09 |
Hello . I have an unused Tich cylinder and valve chest casting . I was thinking of using it to make a small mill engine . I just wondered if any plans had been produced for such a project , or more likely make it up as you go along . Regards Phil |
Thread: stuck chuck again |

The copper grease sounds like a sensible idea I wil get some .. have to be on line though , till local shops reopen Phil |

YES YES YES , Done it , I must have been using the wrong hole for the locking pin , 5/8 square bar i the chuck and a copper hammer and it came first time . I cant imagine why it wouldn't move before , I have heard that a gasket on the mandrel before screwing the chuck on will prevent it happening again , is that right ? I have been doing quite a bit of heavy machining , but only on aluminium . Thanks again guys for the help , I was seriously thinking of dismantling the spindle , or machining the back plate away Phil |

I have tried all those methods , except checking if I am using the right hole for the locking pin . not used back gear , not hit the chuck key I will check that this afternoon Phi |

I cant get the chuck off my Suoer 7 , The pin at the rear wont hold the shaft , I have tried all the usual methods . Thinking about un bolting the chuck and turning the back plate away , or removing the spindle and hopefully griping more tightly . . Others must have had the same problem Or simply leaving it on and using my other lathe if I need a 4 jaw job Phil |
Thread: Workshop Gloves |
30/05/2020 11:03:21 |
I was wearing some thin rubber gloves ( not nitrile) while polishing with some emery tape on the lathe , suddenly caught up and pulled my finger in , Glove wrapped round the bar , tightened on my finger , luckily the belt was slack. but I had a job reaching the off switch , Made a mess of my skin but no broken bones . Motto never wear gloves and be VERY careful using emery tape Phil |

back when I was at work we had a tool for the job . a sort of bent over circlip pliers , put it in the slot ,close the handle and open up the slot making it easy to slip the pins out Phil |

these came from a box of tools bought from a past on friend , any idea what the clamp might be for ? Seems a complicated way of holding something The other is an apprentice piece , the part fits the hole any way you try . remarkable workmanship |

Thread: Buying a small mill |

all I can add , is do not buy one with a round column . They are a menace when you lose the registration when you have to lift the head , I have a Sealey, makes a good drill except for the same problem , I have a small one with proper knee action , much better Phil |
Thread: wide guide |

Just a comment about my recent conversion . The lathe seems to have much smoother travel , and cuts beautifully . I wish I had done it earlier . All I can say is that if anyone has a well worn machine its a good move and not as difficult as it may seem from reading about it . just watch out for falling shims , they seem to have a life of there own Phil |
Thread: wide guide conversion |
11/04/2020 12:52:07 |
Finished mine this morning before it got too warm I used the gauge plate strip method , mainly because it didn't involve butchering the cross slide in case i wanted to return it (if there was no improvement ) The half nuts engage with out difficulty . possibly because of the general wear and tare . As its a gear box model , moving the lead screw is impossible anyway Very happy with the result , goes from one end to the other without tightening and seems to turn better , Too warm in there for further tests at moment Phil |

has anyone done this wide guide conversion? The latest article shows a strip of gauge plate fitted at the back , but the Ganderton system does not need it . I cant quite see why it should be needed , as the back of the bed is machined and the inside of the back of the saddle has a machined surface . Both unused since new regards Phil |
Thread: Finish Good then Bad cl300 |

I have been having a similar problem with some 1/2 stainless , lovely finish till I worked it down to 5/32 for a valve stem . The smaller it gets , the worse the finish Hight spot on tried different speeds / feeds Phil |

I remember the old Villiers 197, I made a jig to hold the head on my ML7 face plate to machine a bit off . The guys I was doing it for wanted a bit more off each time till the performance fell off , Nothing technical take about a 1/16 off please !! Phil |
