Have a look at the rear of the control box. I recall there are a couple of screw cap type fuse holders there. Might be thinking of something else..... Graham

OK. I give up.

Bye folks!

Suggest a look see at the H&S Executive website would be a good idea.

But then it is "Elfin Safety" so who cares.......

13/09/2020 18:13:46

One last time. What does your Covid specific risk assessment have to say?

If the answer is "we ain't got one" then I suggest your problems are greater than worrying about 6 and out!

"If I read them correctly there is a suggestion that working on the club's business and could be exempt"

Sorry folks - H&S again! Every business must complete a documented Covid related risk assessment.

Not the answer you wanted I will accept but if you need any help, just ask.....

In answer to John H's initial posting. It is not so much what "others" are doing but what your own documented risk assessment considers the outcome of the potential issues raised to be. Yes this means getting involved with H&S and yes I expect the normal childish comments regarding "Elfin Safety" but it is the way forward. Graham

I have no doubt that my reply will invoke the usual suspects ranting about "Elfin Safety" however.

Every business has a duty of care to all its employees, Part of the duty of care is the production of a risk assessment which considers how "an event" may impact either directly or indirectly on an employee or employer. I work for a company manufacturing large special purpose vehicles and on the face of it one would think we would be able to carry on as business as usual, but it isn't that simple.

Consider the basic advice offered by the Government and Medical advisers:-

1) Maintain 2m separation at all times.

2) Provide means of hand washing and sanitising.

3) Only continue to work if it is essential.

In the environment I work, the 2m separation cannot be maintained at all times - we have doors with no visibility panels - two persons could meet. Large components need two or more to handle, tools are used by more than one person, items need to be collected and delivered from stores, first aid needs to be provided, Washrooms would need rearranging, we would need to be sanitising constantly.

Is our work essential - in terms of the shareholders yes - in terms of the end users yes - but essential enough to put persons at risk? No.

Now although I have used ARC on numerous occasions and I must admit that I have never actually visited Ketan's premises, I have the greatest respect for him. Is model engineering equipment "essential" hardly. Will he be able to satisfy a realistic risk assessment? Hardly.

In the end, why expose himself or his staff to any potential risk?

I will now get my tin hat on, ready for a verbal onslaught!

Stay safe.

One trick that I have used is to cut a length of wire and hold it under tension in a piercing saw frame. You can then draw file the wire to the required section before cutting and forming.

Good luck.

My replacement mill, apparently checked over by Chester's Chief Engineer was worse than the original..... Oh yes the motor in the replacement machine was fried on delivery as well.

Personally I would always go for a "green machine" - based on multiple purchases for home and work.

Jon

I am not sure where you are located in the UK, but the Model Steam Road Vehicle Society (MSRVS) is holding its annual show on the weekend of June 23rd and 24th in Tewkesbury. There will be around 60 engines on site, in all scales and sizes and plenty of people to ask questions and advice of.

There are plans to offer driving experiences and so you would also have the chance to sit behind a traction engine or roller.

You would get a really warm welcome and the society has a wealth of experience and support on offer. If you or anyone else needs any more information on the society or the show, either PM me or look on the website:-

Thread: Chester or Warco.
20/11/2017 20:38:45

Have purchased Warco Mills and Lathes for industrial use with no issues at all. Purchased Chester mill for my own use at home. First one supplied rusty, combined metric and imperial leadscrews and indexes. Returned as unfit for use..... Second one supplied - allegedly fully inspected at the UK works by the chief engineer - surface finish no better, motor and control board went with a bang on first turning the supply on........ Got full refund and went elsewhere!

Make your own decision, but if I was in the market again I would go for a green machine!

Thread: A moan - steel of mysterious composition
02/07/2017 09:55:07

Working for a company which manufactures equipment for petrochemical and medical applications, the quality of material we use is generally proscribed by the end user, and we have to supply a detailed material record book which defines exactly what is used in manufacture.

For every ferrous and non ferrous material we utilise, we request from the supplier a certificate (see en 10204 on Google for details) which clearly determines the material through a series of traceability checks. In addition we also (for some clients) have to complete local PMI checks (Positive Material Identification - again see google).

These checks are needed to ensure that the end user gets a product that complies with internationally recognised standards. Do we need such documentation for most of what we model engineers manufacture - probably not. Does the purchaser of the hospital bed need it? Very unlikely - especially as every certificate has a significant cost associated with it.......
