Thread: French door locks |

I searched high and low for one of this type of lock for my shed. I ended up buying an "ATRA" lock from ebay, the complete lock with top, bottom surface mounted shoot bolts and 5 bar side lock only cost around £20. Wish I'd bought a spare at that price.....

Thread: Die head and chasers... got a bunch, no idea! swap for knowledge? |

The die heads are worth good money, especially with complete (4) dies. All the ones I have sold have gone overseas.

Thread: Bore mic/comparitor? |

I'd say bore comparator, not sheet material.

Thread: AMA 250Vx750 fault |
12/02/2023 07:20:17 |
I had a (slightly) similar issue with the DC motor on mill. 1 brush was total shot, but new brushes in and had a small firework display! After stripping the motor, the gaps in the commutator were full of carbon and showed signs of heavy arcing. Skimmed up and cleaned the gaps very carefully. (being honest it took 2 attempts to remove all the debris) and had the mill back to normal.
Good luck and keep us updated on this please.

when nurses are being asked to pay for inflation. Why single out the nurses? They have and are getting increases (along with the rest of the public sector) above the private sector.

Thread: Squeezing copper tube? |
01/02/2023 04:38:51 |
Would it not be better to just fix the "fault" correctly, the heating would only be out of action for a few hours?
The risk of serious damage just does not look to be worth the return, to me.

Thread: Using a Morse taper reamer - advice please |
28/01/2023 06:05:00 |
As an apprentice we used taper drill, roughing reamer and finally a finishing reamer. Not seen a morse taper reamer for years. Quick google turned up the below
If I remember correctly, they worked pretty well.

Thread: Kids wearing adult clothes~aka 5" mini lathe chuck & more. |
14/01/2023 03:22:14 |
I've ran a 5" chuck on my SC4 for years, so long in fact that I have worn out one chuck ( I do a production job on this lathe making stainless screws). It must have been started/stopped hundreds of thousands of times.
Never had any trouble.

You want to see the foundry videos! No PPE at all. This is one of the reasons that imports have mostly finished our once great manufacturing ability. Nothing is as cheap as human life......

I expect that a few people will soon start posting their concerns for the safety of these workers and the working conditions........

Thread: Chinese diesel heater |

I think using a welder in a wooden shed is probably more "dangerous:, but we do what we do.
Some of the responses on this the thread really must put some people off posting on here.

Thread: DIY DNA....! |

Having seen one if those on youtube a while a go I made one. I only got as far as a complete helix before I had to give up and finish. Possibly the most "distracting" machining I have done!

Thread: Some (daft?) boring bar questions plus related one on drilling. |

I've had very good results with elastic bands (wrapped around) and plasticine (just squeezed around) on boing bars to help damp vibration. Jim |
Thread: Cost of materials |

Metal prices have started to come down, I see this in my day job.
If I want/need metal I just buy it, even at 100% loadings it's still worth the pleasure I get from machining it in to swarf/scrap/maybe useful tools.....

This whole post seems to me to be a very good reason not to post any workshop or build videos on this forum. Seems to me even if you have a cable or pipe out of true or a seemingly non complient clamping on a workpiece it will bring down the wroth of some people on you.
Just my 2 pence worth on the subject. regards This why I don't post that I power my workshop with an extension lead, fed by a 3 pin plug. I'm no doubt living on borrowed time (not that I care).

You could always ask for a material cert, this will list thr properties of the metal. Any company should be able to give you this.
The vast majority of certs I see at work are from China nowadays Jim |

My go to is silver steel for such jobs.
