Microsoft is implementing OAuth2 all over and there are plenty of complaints in other places about email failure particularly if a non MS email client is used. (Imagine what the hardy band of Eudora users are going through!) You are not alone. |

This is all very clever; but is it progress ?
It does, at least, beat the "shipped - in transit - delivered" style of "tracking". |

Brushless doesn't just mean it's got no brushes, it means it also runs on DC. In my day, brushless motors were properly called "brushless dc motors" ...you wouldn't have expected an ac motor to have brushes. |

It looks like light rust to me too, but from the photos it's mostly on parts of the prismatic bed that don't matter! This lot is under the chuck where the saddle never goes:

Thread: Latest Scam |

I think the fact that some one calling from Nigeria can cloak the call with a UK dialing code is the telecoms industries greatest failing. For years they have said that they can't do anything about it. The fact is that they can but they won't.
I'm fairly sure that the telephone company's computer knows the actual origin of any call. That means it should be possible for customers to elect not to receive calls from countries they choose. (Or it might be easier for customers to choose the countries they will allow calls from). They (the telcos) could even market it as a value-added service - a travesty but still .... I won't hold my breath. |

Just to let people know the latest scam telephone calls received recently have come with our Area Code and realistic area number.
I'm surprised if that's something new in the UK. It's been common here for a number of years leading to the government insisting that the telcos "do something about it". Predictably that has led to absolutely no difference. They use spoofed local numbers to make you think that the call is from someone living nearby - an acquaintance or relative - so that you will pick up. It's so overdone though that it has the opposite effect ... legitimate calls from friends and relatives are more than likely shunted to answering machines/services. |
Thread: Magnet Material for Free Pendulum Clock |
06/11/2022 00:52:25 |
May I comment as a total know-nothing greenhorn? It was my impression that the timing of a pendulum clock is solely set by the length of the pendulum itself. If the pendulum is set swinging it will go back and forth at the same rate ... tick-tock. However because of mechanical (friction) losses it's amplitude will gradually reduce down to zero in the absence of some energy input either by weights in a mechanical clock or by the magnetic impulse in a solenoid clock. I don't understand the reference to clock accuracy wrt the solenoid material. Surely it's the synchronicity (is that a word?) of what's driving the solenoid that matters. Have I made a total twerp of myself? |

Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 03/11/2022 16:43:15: The main problem with email for Two Factor Authentication is it's not immediate. Too many people check their email once a day or less which is too slow for an authentication check intended to speed valid transactions through the system.
... but, if they're sitting (as they would be) at their computer, trying to log on to online banking and the bank wants to do a 2FA, they'd certainly have pretty much instant access to an email that they are aware has been sent. It's not a "check once a day" case, it's check on demand (in my case all emails come direct to my machine - I don't have to go looking for them). With only a landline, doing the second factor by phone is actually more problematic since it could be answered by someone else on another extension. And if that someone else has cognitive problems, you've probably missed the auth-no and have to start again (if the bank lets you). Perhaps better for the blind/visually-impaired. Worse for the hearing impaired. Frankly, I'd like to see the bank quantify the email vs phone security risks rather just parading out the "email is insecure" knee-jerking. There are a couple of other effects of removing the button too: - one less area to coolant-proof. - there is a minor (but always worth having) improvement in overall reliability numbers. That said, most of the pictures on the Mitutoyo site seem to have the mm/in button shown (on the front). |
