Nice piece of kit you have there. Does it have the usual 40 turns per rev ? This gives one turn 9 degrees.

Thread: Drilling hardened steel

Is it worth the effort ? There are spares out there at most autojumbles and some new ones from the magneto specialists Try Tony Cooper in Halesowen Birmingham.

Thread: lathe cutting fluid.
05/01/2020 14:25:00

During my apprenticeship I ran a "Keller" copy milling machine, the cutting oil was made up of Lard Oil and parrafin.

No rust issues but very unsociable smell.

Thread: Can anyone identify this power hacksaw
04/01/2020 08:13:38

My "Excalibur" (Spelling ?) machine has or did have a similar drive belt set up. Now converted to Vee belts. The saw Arm on mine is very different which may indicate either a totally different machine or a latter model.

Welcome along Steven, any questions and someone on here will have an answer.

Thread: 0-1 Micrometers
29/12/2019 20:04:04

I have around 4 or 5 if I include the 0 to .5 Just bought a new 0 to 1 because the older ones, some I have had for 55 + years are getting harder to read. Until I got the new one my go to was a Mitutoyo I bought around 1970. Maybe when they where first imported ? All the old hands told me I was wasting money because it would not last.

Thread: Have you got one?
27/12/2019 20:39:08

Yes I have one, they are from the days when wallpaper came with a "Safe Edge" to be trimmed off before use.

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2019
27/12/2019 17:06:55

Spent a few hours today cleaning and sweeping, followed by oiling the machines and adjusting gibs.

Retired to the house to place an order for a lot of workshop consumables. Start making swarf again tomorrow.

Welcome along Johnathan,

What lurks in your workshop ?

Thread: Hello from Dave Morris
24/12/2019 08:39:08

Welcome along Dave, from another petrol head. Mainly old pre war bikes for me now, room and money put the cars beyond reach when I retired they had to go.

Thread: Slip gauges
14/12/2019 08:53:56

I spent 50 years in engineering and most "shop floor" sets where "workshop" grade. Only the very high end toolrooms I worked in had Inspection grade slips.

Thread: Foundries
12/12/2019 08:51:09

I will look at Manor as they are not to far from me should the need arrive. I spent my last 13 years before retiring working for a pressure die foundry who also did some gravity work Sadly they only do the pressure die work now.

I would not contemplate back yard casting if a hint of quality is required, I have seen what is involved with getting good castings from known materiel.

I will watch this thread as I also use Alpro. I am happy with Alpro but may one day need someone closer to home.

Thread: Keigan Motor
10/12/2019 09:27:41

I wonder if it develops enough torque to use as a positional indexer linked to a rotary table ? If so I want one for all those odd number of positions on things like motorcycle sprockets.

Michael, post a price if you find one. Chris.

Thread: Toolpost dilemma
08/12/2019 19:11:11

Lou, that is totally the opposite of what I found. A case of pay your money and take a chance, I bought Bison brand and they did not fit. If I had a local supplier it would be worth taking the toolpost along to save all the posting to and fro with poor fitting parts.

08/12/2019 09:22:47

Ive bought a few expensive toolholders for my genuine Dickson post and few have fitted. Some budget priced ones from RDG fit well. Maybe worth trying one ?

Thread: How should I check a milling machine?
03/12/2019 20:06:45

If it is a good one they are a nice machine. We had one in the spark eroding shop where I last worked, it was like new and I only used it twice in 15 years. The type of work I needed to do suited a Bridgeport better. Good Luck.

Thread: Ho hum it's a cracker, but not in a good way!
30/11/2019 16:02:36

I would plan long term to replace it. A few years ago I replaced the cross slide on my 14" x 40" lathe.

As a one off I just made a polystyrene patter to be burnt out of the sand box prior to pouring the iron. I had it cast locally and did the machine work on my Bridgeport mill. Total cost was around £50.

Thread: Be gentle with me!!!!!!!
28/11/2019 07:50:22

Welcome along Derek, I am not a Myford user but someone will be along soon to advise.

Thread: VFD off the bay
26/11/2019 21:00:27

I resorted to a Chinese VFD when my expensive made in the UK inverter failed to run my Bridgeport. The UK back up was good but the machine would only run for a few minutes before tripping out and could not be resolved.
