Thread: Pickling Stainless Steel

Where I worked the welders used a proprietary white paste which had a weak ( 2-3%? ) solution of Hydrofluoric acid plus Nitric acid in it, it worked well and being a paste wouldn't splash but I think that would be also too nasty to use at home due to the HF..

John

Sounds a bit like this stuff **LINK** sold for use in a domestic environment

Rod

Funny i was watching people using this on you tube last week, most had no gloves on or anything at all.

Its a mixture of Barium sulphate,Sulphuric acid and Fluoride salts ,obviously produces a weak HF solution due to the sulphuric acid and fluoride.

According to the MSDS for Armour etch, 160cm2 of skin coverage can lead to hypercalcaemia (which is only around 4"- 5" square area)

Martin, have you got a photo of the offending piece and size needed, i have a load of mammoth ivory that i use in my work ,including thin flat pieces which are of little use to me .It varies from almost white to dark yellow cream.

You have to make sure you know your worm ratio as mentioned above.

Thread: Can I machine Silver Steel OK with HSS End Mills?
24/11/2017 21:18:26

What sort of boring tools are you making. I got a load of excellent HSS ones off ebay that were made by Deckel and mostly unused, they work brilliantly. Many people make similar using silver steel and then hardened.

I must be unusual as i often face from the centre outwardssmiley particularly if there a hole in the end,in that case the tool pictured would work.

22/11/2017 12:58:33

A bit over your budget but GM tools have just listed a rather nice what looks like late 1940s - 1950s south bend Model A. Looks to have not much wear and the condition of the paintwork is far better than my 1963 model A when i bought it.

Ideal for someone looking for something better than a myford ml7smiley

Take a look at this video of a guy in America who is checking the quality of his Grizzly lathe G0602 which is essentially the same 10x22 lathe sold under many names in the UK.

Going by the contact shown by the bluing ,i get the feeling the scraper marks on the saddle that are already present are simply for decoration.

Thread: Boring the MT2 on spindle
19/11/2017 16:47:44

is there any reason why you cant use an actual er32 spindle as a spindle . I was toying with the idea for something i was gonna make , as they are available with a straight shank up to 40mm , and up to 150-200mm long . The 40mm just happens to sort of fit the common taper roller bearings used in many mini mills etc... ie.. 62mm outside and 40mm id.

I did buy one from apt for around £20-25 and the quality is good ,though they have a flat on one side unfortunately.

Just another of my daft ideas.

Still curious how you intend powering the spindle /head??

I would think it better if Sean kept everything in one thread as he has 2-3 threads concerning the spindle /vertical head for his Centec .

It would certainly avoid confusion.smiley Come on Sean do a quick sketch doesnt have to be anything fancy, as i am interested in how your doing it .

I tried doing a drawing using some crap download I found , had it all done and the bloody thing wouldn't let me do anything with it 😥

I will keep everything spindle related to this thread from now on .... Feel like I'm being watched now ..... Just remember I'm a newbie to this and some of the terminology has me stumped , please try and keep things simple 😁

Not being watched Sean just interested, im a relative beginner myself to anything id call precision machining.

I tend to jump right in with some difficult (to me at least project) and sometimes surprise my self and other times make a right balls up of it.

Thread: Taylor Hobson engraving spindle
18/11/2017 00:05:30
Posted by Max Tolerance on 17/11/2017 21:00:43:

Not sure why you would want to strip one down but they are not really user repairable. The bottom bearing is made as part of the shaft with the inner ring machined as one with the central part and the outer ring as one with the belt pulley. Between the two is a complete compliment of steel balls with no cage. The bearings were greased using a special type. If the spindle is damaged i.e bent it is nearly impossible to do anything with it. If the balls are worn then you will find the inner and outer ring will also be damaged. If there are balls missing then these can be replaced but you will probably find the spindle runs eccentric especially at the higher speeds necessary for fine engraving. Finally the end float adjustment is obtained by careful tightening of the internal screwed parts of which there are a number.

Taylor Hobson used to offer a service repair but obviously this isn't available any more. However Pantograph services employ a number of ex Taylor Hobson people who should be able to help at a price. Unless you can be sure of the provenance of the parts offered on eBay there is a large risk of getting a dodgy unit and I personally would be wary of obtaining one from this route.

I don't think the spindle from a K type machine fits the D machine. But the A,C and D machines all take the same type.

You can still buy or get the spindles overhauled. Pantograph services do it. Not cheap as the prices arent given for a new spindle but around £160 for the overhaul.

Sorry didnt see your mention of pantograph services.smiley

Kevin, i hope you get some replies,as i have a couple of inverters that i want to wire a remote pod on and all inverters seem to have different labelled terminals which certainly confuses me . On my south bend lathe i have a remote box which i salvaged from something else which has been sitting next to the lathe for 3 years .Currently im reaching over to the wall and using the inverter controls on its front panel.

Being electronically illiterate myself i dont follow all this 2 and 3 wire control stuff,etc...

Have you bought one of those pods off ebay??

I fitted a brass plate to the front of mine and etched a south bend design on it ,the buttons look naff but as i said its been sitting there for years. I do have a speed pot to fit on the side as well.,and id like the forward reverse switch fitted as well.

It shows you how to wire a remote on the ebay images. Do you not just press the res (bottom half of the stop buttton) to reverse. Just guessing though.
