Thread: Tig Welder recommendation |
13/05/2020 13:23:39 |
Can anyone recommend a Tig welder for light use and value for money please. When looking its a mine field and generally when I buy something I usually find a better product after. Basically it would be useful for re welding broken band saw blades that break on the weld and general light gauge. Any recommendations will be appreciated . Thread: Soba rotary table |
12/05/2020 10:47:41 |
Question about the 5 inch Soba rotary table. My hand wheel seemed a bit slack so decided to adjust by instruction on the service manual. I have now got rid of the slack and feels better, but the grub screw on the side that's 90 deg to the worm lock tee screw what is this for. I screwed it in and lost the grub screw in the mechanism but luckily it was still held on to the allen key so I could unscrew it, but it doesn't seem to do anything. as its not shown or explained what its for. Also the instructions show a diagram with a screw A and B with a steel ball, I cant find a steel ball on my rotary table. Sorry if I'm a bit thick but if I'm show something I've got it but reading these instructions has got me confused, Why also is the clamping on the table can take 12mm bolt but give 8mm bolts there seems a lot of space I would of thought 8mm plus slots would have been better, and on the side of the rotary table there is not enough space for a 12mm nut if you wanted to have one as only enough room for half a nut, same with the tailstock slot to take 12mm. I understand that its cheap but with a bit of thought and no expense on manufacture it could of been made better. Bob Edited By BOB BLACKSHAW on 12/05/2020 10:59:14 |

These parts that you are making look very good Ron, amazed at all these lumps of material your using.Where do you get your stock of metal from as I find it a bit of a struggle to find larger sizes. Bob |
Thread: Soba rotary table |

I have just brought this 5 inch Soba rotary table as my 4 inch was a bit small and the fixing to the table the slots did not line up an was difficult to hold. I have a SX2p and I'm making two plates for the ends of the table so this will give me 2 inches plus if needed, they are bolted on so a temporary fix . I am thinking about a 2inch extension for the height, has anyone done on other SXP2 mills as this will give the rotary table more room. I have not yet used the table but it all seems nice and smooth, looks well made for the money. I will make a clip for the spring handle that's used on the dividing plates as when turning say twenty times the pin can hit the brass divider if your grip slips, also the handle on the rotary table could be made to rotate. Any comments on hiring the mill for the sx2p will be appreciated. Bob |
Thread: Cloth on string that hangs down on old aircraft |

Hello, first time in the tea room hope I'm not ignored. I have noticed on old planes like the Spitfire that when they are parked up they have red cloth hanging down on parts of the body, what are they for. Bob |

Thanks all for the replies. It is a Soba 5 inch, fits the mill ok 90mm slots for the tee nuts and central fixing. The fixing points was a concern as I could not get a satisfactory answer from the seller but Ron has the same mill so took a chance. Bob |

Decided to buy a rotary table with tailsock and plates after a few cans of beer the other week which arrived today, bit of a impulse buy as I don't think I will do it justice . I looked on you tube and the owner completely stripped it down to clean it up and reassembled with grease. My question is this nesscerray or will a clean up to get rid of surface grease be good enough . Bob |
Thread: Hercules Steam Crane Tubal Cain |

I've made the boiler and has come out quite well no leaks after silver soldering so I'm pleased with that out of the way. The crane on air test worked ok and lifted around 10lb s decided to have a go with the boiler and that to worked but noticed that 30lb on the gauge was registered and emptied the boiler rather quickly. All the mechanism is smooth and the cylinders have a viton o ring with a good fit, I checked for any obvious leaks but only slight from the moving parts which is expected. My question is, in the book the author said that the crane works on 10lb pressure which I find that mine cant, but with mine no obvious reasons that mine cant achieve the same, I found also with air pressure no way would 10lb work. Thread: What am i going to make with this scrap |
10/04/2020 10:25:23 |
Reading this post on scrap and what can be made from that, I made two of these the other week. A flower pot ,a kneeling mat, a bit of stainless from a waste bin, a bit of old sofit board, roasting rack for the feet, and a beer ca a bit of rod for the counterbalance . They make good wind garden ornaments, it would be good for some others making one as a rest from the shed as they can be made outside in this nice weather. I wouldn't worry, I've ordered in the past and had part orders received and have waited two weeks for the rest, In my opinion they seem to take a laid back approach with orders. |

Thanks Bill I keep making silly mistakes, it's an age thing I had 2 1/2 inch as 75mm mentally fixed and not 63.5mm Bob Edited By BOB BLACKSHAW on 24/03/2020 10:43:59 |

I have made the crane and was surprised how much it can lift on air pressure, I think 10lb has been suggested, I was concerned that that weight will put a strain on the gears so halved that and it lifted that with ease. I want to make the boiler now but only have 67mm dia copper tube it calls for 2 1/2 inch dia, if I make the boiler to the same volume as the 2 1/2dia which would make the boiler longer would it operate the same, as it will have a smaller dia at the heat source. I had a appointment with the doctors yesterday and it's a total shut down telephone call only but my hospital pre OP appointment yesterday was business as usual ,was told that my operation could go ahead. Perhaps trying to keep me optimistic but they did seem hopeful and suggested that I keep at home and semi self isolate. The blood department was elbow to elbow and no sign of six feet apart, totally different from the doctors surgery, I was expecting some form of testing at the hospital entrance, but none, two different ways by NHS. Thanks Bill, I have a lot of springs in the shed I will check for any 24g. |

Very slowly getting it finished, as I dropped it on the floor and smashed up the pipe work, arthritis in the hands didn't help. The two cylinder springs for oscillating, what springs are recommended as the springs I've got on will not allow the flywheel to slightly spin. Would a light spring allow a airtight seal, I don't want to keep stripping it down in case of me fumbling. Bob |

As for pgk's reply, Sunday the Lidl near me the car park was full at 08 45 am, I don't like or shop there but a bit more civilised at Sainsburys, the shelves where full except for toilet rolls. Question why are toilet rolls on the hit list, will the virus give us diarrhoea ? Bob |

Ron The dividing head you have on the SX2p mill can you tell me what it is as I am looking to get one soon. I have a rotary table and find that the fixing bolts are a problem with the mill table lining up but I made adjustments to make it fit, that is why I have not got a dividing head at the moment. Sorry that this is not about your thread but looks a good set up. Bob |
