Bill - explained above - the parallel canal doesn't cover the full canal - the Ever Given choose the non-paralleled bit to plough into both banks.
Thread: Buying advice sought re Milling Machines: e.g. Proxxon: FF230 vs. BFW40/E vs. MF70
29/03/2021 18:11:55
can you use a wheeled stand/table to move it away from living space - those you mention sound more like toy machines not really suited to steel - look at ArcEuro's offers - milling tends to spread small bits of metal - not usually carpet friendly

I've seen a report on another site that it has been freed and is moving at 5knots towards the Great Bitter Lakes (presumably this will allow it to be overtaken whilst being checked out)

Thread: Are we being listened to on the phone
27/03/2021 11:16:04
"Come on chaps, lets have a smile, the world is NOT that bad."
but that doesn't mean we shouldn't make it better and removing intrusive surveillance is one thing I am strongly in favour of.
Thread: LG TV ... updated webOS

Brexit will mean we have lost the EU's power to stop such surveillance - the UK though has put us under house arrest for months has it is clear no intention to protect privacy - vide even the census asking for permission for things like google etc.

the latest issue of "The Magpi" has a step by step guide as to how to install a PiHole on a cheap Pi3 or Pi4 processor - it might be worthwhile to try it with say a laptop and see what and how much it blocks - similar instructions are probably online
Thread: Power Transformer buzzing when fed via Solid State Relay-Why?
25/03/2021 18:35:14
is the switching perfectly symmetric - maybe there is a dc offset which offsets the operating point
Thread: Annoying phone calls
25/03/2021 13:00:45
revenue - it will cost the telecom companies more to stop than any loss the complaints might cause tho in this case probably no loss other than costs of changing numbers (tho like most companies complaints are totally ignored)
Thread: Any advice on how to cut/file a 45 degree chamfer on a 1mm steel sheet to EXACTLY 45 degrees?
25/03/2021 12:49:32
mitre 45deg joins in skirting boards soon separate - the best approach for internal corners is a butt joint but into a shoulder cut in one of the boards.
I suspect the same approach can be used for dado rails
Thread: LG TV ... updated webOS

Android is spyware - Google needs to be broken up and certainly to pay considerable more tax than it does but it has been allowed to grow too big and too invasive and, like the crooked banks in 2008 too big to fail, it will need international agreement, currently in very short supply, to bring it back under control.

more importantly are we starting to see the dreaded 'influencers' at work here in that who knows who is possibly paying for such 'recommendations'
Thread: LG TV ... updated webOS
25/03/2021 08:50:25
possibly use VLC on say a Pi400 and treat your expensive but now toxic web enhanced TV as merely a monitor - after all if it can broadcast to devices on your local net it can download malware to them and just as readily upload your banking details to whosoever it wants - I just don't understand people who would admit such a device onto their network or can even trust it not to do these things without your permission.
Thread: Computer Update

the Pi400 is amazing - what I want to use it for is my pico scopes but so far Pico have it seems fouled up the linkage of the Picoscope software so its not yet possible - I raised this but obviously as a retiree with just 2 scopes I'm not as important as what seems to be industry standard Win10 (that itself amazes me but I guess they get to turn off the spyware inflicted on consumers) but the combination of the Pi and a cheaper 4 channel scope would make a fantastic student tool during the work at home which will continue I think for several more years

Dell products aimed at the business market generally have a good reputation - I'd be very wary of those aimed at the consumer and sold at places such as PC-World - also Dell tended to have some features that can make it expensive to upgrade (eg non-standard PSUs)
Thread: Tea Spoons

limescale remover based on phosphoric acid (readily distinguishable by smell) ETA works well on coffee stains on my now 35yrs old 'plastoc'? (looks like ceramic but isn't) sink - no tea however in my household so no experience here.

ask the kitchen manager for the next empty squeezy bottle that contained washing up liquid - or smaller ones that contained hand gel with the pump action - these can be knocked over without spilling anything
Thread: Computer Update

I have 5 (6 if you include one with a French keyboard) Lenovo X-series now somewhat ancient but all will run 64 bit Linux systems usually Mint of various generations inc old 32bit versions or Debian XFCE or Ubuntu (which however I dislike intensely but Pico tech for scopes only will run under Ubuntu) but pre covid I never paid more than ?120 for these and often a lot less, sometimes even ?30 or so at auction - the older models are easy to upgrade - maximising memory and of course a SSD work wonders for speed and your workload doesn't sound particularly demanding.

Newer models of Lenovo might have certain restrictions on non-Lenovo batteries etc and may not be readily upgraded

This is the sort of discussion and subsequent article that should be carried in MEW possibly at the expense of 6 page articles on Mull scarecrows
Thread: Weller TCP soldering iron
21/03/2021 15:50:09
as linked to by speelwerk these weller irons control their temperature by choice of curie temperature of the bit - modern non lead solder generally requires a higher temperature than the old lead solder hence I suspect the reason for the disposal of a very good iron.
