If there is a glass works near you the benches are often covered in a dense felt. It is used for 'blocks' also.
Modern 'non cut' bench covers are coming in so old felt can be had for the asking (and a beer).

Thread: Hello Everybody! I am Grant.
24/11/2015 08:03:54

Hello Grant, sound like a reasonable lathe when you consider 0.044mm is only 0.0017" and some of that may be the rod?

eccentric sheave, straps, rod and 'forked jointy end thingy'.
I shall clean up the solder a bit more.

I've uploaded the images to my album, Flexispeed Meteor II,
Page 3 covers the back gear etc.

Thread: Unusual but useful workshop tools
22/11/2015 08:33:14

If you abuse your tools you can't complain about quality.
Anyone who uses a cheese drill on metal is asking for trouble. They should be used only for making the holes in cheese.

Thread: Parting tool for ML7

How quaint wink

21/11/2015 08:34:23

On my sc3 I use the usual front tool post but run the lathe in reverse for parting, with the tool upside down. I used 1" stainless the other day parting an eccentric so a bit of an interrupted cut to start with. Just a hss 8mm square tool ground down to 3/32, no 'top' rake, cuts most things sweetly.

ls 20-11-15 (1).jpgAnother week done but nothing very obvious to show for it. Lots of little 'hidden' parts.

Next step, the eccentric strap and rod. I may make the lattice 'rod' from 2mm tube, see how it looks.

>Have you actually checked that the correct breadknife is being used? They are made in left and right handed versions (I'm serious) and using the wrong one is a recipe for making toast of the bread!<<

Depends which way the grain goes.wink

(sorry)

Does the OP have a lathe? just part it off?

Thread: What is a dot punch?

Thread: yet another lathe ID ?
13/11/2015 16:19:43

Thank you for the pictures Murray, they will give him something to aim for and make a good reference.
After a thorough clean and inspection it looks like it has never been used, or if it has then for very few hours. The headstock bearing brasses still have the 'cross hatching' inside and there are obvious scraper marks showing on the bed. All the arises are clean not a dink on it.
Could be as late as the '50's?

The coffee machine says the pressure vessel is rated to 15 bar Peter. I haven't put a gauge on it yet. It certainly does make them go for a short time laugh
