Thread: Laser Cutting Guide for Femi NG120ABS bandsaw
21/05/2021 10:00:23

Way to go Andy ... there has been a lot of interest so I have updated the blog with a download ZIP file with the Gerbers and STEP files.

In passing I sent the laser details to the UK Femi agent and they told me that Femi have now starting to fit lasers to their new models starting with the DCS110.

Not being related to an octopus I struggle to hold a short chunky unbalanced piece of stock in the right position between the clamp jaws, measure the protruding length and tighten the vice handle simultaneously. Clearly I am at a physical or perhaps mental disadvantage to more worldly folk.

The link below gives details of construction of a laser based cutting guide to help stock positioning on a Femi NG120ABS. The device may be applicable to other bandsaws or cutting devices.

Thread: SMOOTHING 3D PRINTS
14/05/2021 18:55:53

XTC is very good but expensive and goes off very very quickly so you can't hang around applying it.

I have used Araldite or Gorilla twin pack glue cut with meths. It goes runny but coats well and does go off OK.

With either it is much easier to get a good finish if you use the wide V shaped foam brushes.

Thread: New EBay payment regime
23/04/2021 08:42:36

I am currently suffering my first payment from EBay relating to a sale.

Assuming you have signed up to the new system, EBay now credit your bank account directly with the funds due from a sale rather than it being instantly passed to your PayPal account as a credit.

Clearly this means that anyone trading on EBay can no longer keep their profits or losses 'air side' in the PayPal account where it would have been away from their auditors prying eyes.

EBay have had my monies sat in their bank account for 2 days so far. I am waiting for the message that they are having teething problems with the new system and it has nothing to do with the interest received from sitting on the funds.

Anyone else being similarly shafted ?

Thread: Help wanted, How can I use a stepper motor as a table feed.
18/04/2021 20:25:18

I fitted steppers to my Myford VMB mill just to give me motorised adjustable drive. It is over the top for what you need with just one axis but the circuitry would simplify dramatically. I could run a CNC milled board if it is of interest.

Thread: Details of modifications to the Burgess BK3 Bandsaw
12/04/2021 19:21:50

Hi Nigel

It was bugging me also as the upper guide had made such a difference to the machine.

You will find all the drawings in the ZIP file.

Following interest from a number of owners I have created a ZIP file of all the modifications I have made to my Burgess BK3 bandsaw together with links to other web resources. The link is at the foot of this latest post.

Thread: Is a CNC the right solution for me?
16/03/2021 10:19:05

I received a mailshot about two new CNC milling machines from Chinese company Titan Machinery that are aimed at the small workshop. They don't appear on their website but the specification of the larger one looks quite nice with 8k spindle, AC servos, linear rails and 8 port tool changer. I guess this is similar to the Syil family ? I have no affiliation to them, who they are etc but thought it sufficiently of interest to post details here.

Since the above message I have had a number of PMs requesting more info on the BK3

Thread: Should I scrap this reel of filament?
07/03/2021 20:30:12

I would echo the comment that despite being a new reel the filament might have a high moisture content and needs drying out. I always soak heat a new reel before using. 36 to 38 degrees for PLA/ABS /PETG for 5 hours.

Hi Peter

I have sent you message and a link to my blog regarding the various work I have done on the BK3 including the notes you mention above. I have also replaced the drive wheel for both the motor drive and the main wheel.

The next best thing to buying from McMaster-Carr is having free access to all their parts as 3D model downloads in Fusion 360.

Thread: Air compressor query
26/02/2021 09:54:51

I would echo Anthony's recommendation. I have the Bambi PT50 which looks like a badged version of the Hyundai 50L. It has a 65% duty cycle and can cope with my Fogbuster mist coolant system.

As a variation of Clive's mounting technique, I modelled in Fusion 360 a 3D printed version of a standard Myford QCTP tool holder to mount the Fogbuster nozzle. The nozzle itself has been modified per Clough42's idea to feed the air and lubricant via 1/2" LocLine. The front position on the QCTP works well in driving the air jet to the back of the lathe. The QCTP fixture also means the nozzle can be quickly removed when working non lubricant materials. If undertaking a boring operation the head is rotated to its normal position and the Fogbuster mount is fitted to the side slot.

Consideration needs to be given to the air supply capacity when running a Fogbuster. I have a Bambi PT50 'silent' compressor that has a 65% duty cycle and gets very warm on a long machine run at 10psi. The air supply feeds the Fogbuster fluid reservoir and onward to twin Fogbuster nozzles.

The nice thing about a misting installation is that you have the choice to just run air or air with coolant unlike flood coolant where it is all or nothing (and messy).

06/02/2021 09:55:43

I use XtremeCut 250C in my FogBuster on my Tormach 440 and my Myford lathe. It seems popular with many of the YouTube machinists. UK sales are from Lubriserv near Bristol, just up the road from where the Bristol Exhibition used to be held. Dilution is 4-12 % for machining. I use 8%. Cost in 2017 was around GBP100 for the 20 litres.

I bought the 20 litre drum in 2017 and am still using it and I reckon my great great great grandson might still be using the same drum such is the dilution and low consumption in the Fogbuster.

If you want a litre bottle full to try (which will last you ages) send me a PM with your shipping address.
