Thread: Centaur engine timing gears
02/09/2018 19:10:15
Thanks for that, what a great supplier! (HPC Gears)
Looks like stock gears can be used with little modification, however I am now spoilt for choice - they can supply left and right hand helical!
Next question - would I need to order left or right hand helical?

I am planning to build the above engine from castings supplied by Reeves.
Unfortunately they don't list the correct timing gears, they can supply 'similar gears' which would involve repositioning the camshaft to account for the gears increased centre's dimension.
Before I interrogate the web for something more suitable,is the Reeves offering the closest I am going to get?

I can vouch for the diamond wheel dresser, they work well but what a mess!
I have my grinder mounted on a wall bracket with wing nuts, I take it off and dress the wheels outside to avoid all the abrasive dust.

Thread: ML7 lost drive

Dismantled the headstock today and had to heat the pulley to get it off the gear - it was still a good fit!
All cleaned up and degreased then assembled with Granville 'bearing fit'
Seems to have done the job, time will tell!

Thread: 3-Phase Motor Conversions: Are They All Hype?

I fitted a Bosch VFD and Brooks .37kw motor to my ML7 and wished I had done it years ago.
I did however wire it all up on the bench to see how it all worked as there are so many parameters which can be changed - it came with 2 books and at first it quite mind blowing!
I'm sure your solution will be a simple wiring change.

Thread: ML7 lost drive

Thanks John, I agree the pulley does run warm and perhaps with the warmer weather it took it beyond the point of no return! I can still use it on 'normal' stuff but working on a 3 inch diameter highlighted the problem.

Thanks for that, it is as I suspected, no longer enough of an interference fit!

Using my ML7 this afternoon turning at a large diameter the chuck stopped. This is usually caused by the mandrel belt slipping as I don't have it that tight, but it wasn't, the belt/pulley was still being driven!
It would appear that the stepped mandrel pulley drives the smaller (brass) gear I am guessing that there is an interference fit within which has now failed (been ok for the last 60 years!)
Obviously a strip down is on the cards and I'm guessing the drive could be restored possibly with 'loctite'?
Anyone else encountered this problem?

The coils are low resistance but could also have a diode across them and if connected the 'wrong' way round could well give you .5 ohm. I recently changed the coil on my Astra as it was 'open circuit' however once it was on the bench I discovered a thermal fuse fitted against the coil and it was this that caused malfunction - probably would have cost about 50p to fix if I had known earlier!

Thread: Dynamos - Reversing the polarity

I repolarized my dynamo by briefly energising the field coils as described. The only unit I changed was reversing the coil connections, so that the HT came out '+'

I am with 1p mobile, which uses EE network and works for me. PAYG 1p a minute calls, 1p a text and 1p a Mb. Minimum top-up ?10 and will last 3 months. Transfer existing number.

Never had a problem with EE.

I think you will find 'hard' mops are sewn nearer the edge making for a more solid buffing wheel.

I made jackable feet to go underneath the cabinet feet, with the bolts screwed down it's all solid, Unscrewing the bolts allows a platform with 2 nylon wheels down to the ground allowing the lathe on the cabinet to be moved - not easy but it does allow it all to be moved.

Thanks for the link Rod, I see it's 1 1/2 bore and 2 inch stroke! A nice size.

Thanks! The Wyvern and Centaur in particular are the sort of engine I was after. Found some running on YouTube and they can sound great I thought although I haven't been able to find the bore/stroke of the Centaur? have any of you built one? and is it possible on an ML7 with a milling head attachment?
