Thread: DROs etc

A DRO on a lathe lets you

  • Switch between metric and imperial should you need to (except when threading).
  • Take measured length cuts with the carriage when there is no graduated dial on the lead screw and the top slide travel is too short or set over at an angle.

It also gives notice when backlash has struck as the display will change.

Is it worth £200+ to you ?

With a mill, above it's a no brainer, they need one.

Thread: Levelling my lathe - a build log

Posted by Iain Downs on 16/09/2023 11:01:22:

N short the bed appears to have a dogleg in it.

All of this (long) blurb ends up with a simple question... 'how can I fix this?'.

The base is probably reasonably flat (I don't really have the kit to test it over a long distance). The bed bolted down to it without any obvious stress implying the feet may already be planar.

If the bed was just twisted I would have expected to see the movement (change of diameter) in one direction not in two. So I can't see how shimming the feet will help - I could possibly twist out the deviation at the headstock end, but it would make the later deviation worse.

Help!

Iain

Ian,

I can't help thinking 'why didn't he put the whole lathe on the mill table if it's that big and check the bed with a dial gauge in the cutter holder in the first place'?

Is it the same when using the top slide with the carriage locked?

I’ve got the little hogger set but they sell the inserts in a set of three, one of each shape which is not convenient for me.

I think it’s time to try something else.

Not surprised Vic those are obsolete. Try here shop apt or ARC and buy the AP## version that suits you and your pocket. You can get the inserts all over ebay as well though maybe to a different quality.

Thread: Old lathes
12/09/2023 10:31:34

Strangely there are many more old lathes that are not part of the Myford family and therefore do not carry the silly pricing that vendors put on paint pot restorations.

You £200 may still be reasonable if you just keep searching ebay for something fairly local.

This Raglan will probably not attract bids as it's all dirty and some may be scrap in that last bucket.

This from Ming the Merciless may be a lemon - only used twice could mean there's something wrong that should have been fixed by the maker - (note he doesn't say it works) but was shipped direct from China so no comeback due to shipping.

Thread: An unexpected weight
11/09/2023 09:51:37

It's going back a bit and times / laws change.....

4o odd years ago my then local hardware sole trader had some scales that he only used to sell putty by the pound out of a big drum. The weights got putty stuck to them from his hands. Weights and Measures were very unhappy about this and insisted that either he cleaned his weights or took a trip to court.

So back then at least giving the customer more than expected was frowned upon even though the greengrocer next door had clean weights but had to give you extra for obvious reasons discussed above.

Morning all,

I also want to fit a reverse switch. This seems very simple - there is an unused 3 pin header on the potentiometer board which gives forward/reverse when either pin 1 or 3 is shorted to pin 2.

A bloke in the USA has a vid on YouTube demonstrating this in action but has anyone on here done it without ill effects?

Thanks

Gareth

Whats reverse used for?

Remove lead screw from table, screw into nut, twist nut with flat spanner till screw is parallel.

Old mineral oil from the 60's can set like loctite, the fix is the is the same - heat

Removal of the nut will give you the added issue of how deep in the knee does the nut go.

There was no need to disturb the nut, just clean it.

If you are tempted to take out the gearbox please be aware it is not like a car, there are no shoulders to tap a bearing up to and if you over do the taper bearing preload you have to dismantle again to tap the bearing outer ring the other way.

Drain the oil and if it doesn't glitter put fresh in and leave it.

This says having a house number is mandatory. It also says there should be street names, presumably this is a council responsibility. If the council haven't assigned numbers I suggest you contact them and tell them to get their act together.

Not quite Ducan,

From your link

It is a legal requirement that all streets and houses must have a clear house number sign or house name, this is enforced by local councils. If you are thinking of removing your house number and replacing it with a name, you will need to talk with your local council.

So if you live in the sticks a road may have a name on the map and no where else. The post code takes you the centre of the village green. If you live in Norfolk your road may be called 'The Street' and 2 miles further on down the road will be another cluster of houses also on 'The Street' , but it's different street and the numbers start again. If it was America you could hear a banjo playing!

Chris's property will have it's official address on his yearly council tax bill letter.

I'm afraid the standard belts won't be of much use without the missing pulley set.
