Thread: Chinese diesel heater
03/01/2023 10:08:27

As we have gone into H&S mode. Dangerous would be one of these This one is in AUS home of the bush fire.

Last saw one operating in winter 1972 ish in a scrapyard shed and glowing a nice cherry red running on sump oil. Even at 19 I knew it was proper dangerous.

Robert,

I think the practical answer will be if Steves workshop burns down and the Brigade find the remains of the heater at the seat of the fire any insurance will be void. They always look for a get out and these things are a sitting duck.

If this was America and someone followed a video on Utube and got a fire then being the country that sue Mcdonalds because there was no warning that the coffee was hot they would probably sue.

BTW In my neck of the woods temporary structures such as sheds and conservatories become part of the habitation when a permanent heating source is added such as a central heating radiator. Portable heaters either plug in or self contained are OK.

The trick for putting brass screws into oak without them breaking was make the hole with a steel one first

Thread: britannia boiler air test

If you have a Stuart built boiler it will have paperwork to tell you the hydraulic test pressure, the running pressure is half that of the hydraulic pressure.

Assuming you have opened the regulator and knowing the chassis has run on air before it may just be you steam piping is blocked with solder or your backhead fittings are leaking worse than you think.

Thread: Lathe jumps out of gear
30/12/2022 10:54:02

Are both the layshaft bearings still good?

It's hard to see why a gear should start drifting when the gear lever has hardly been moved in 20 years even if the detents are a bit 'off'.

Ford E93A Anglia / Prefect, but not the remains of Pinball Wizard.

Gary,

You've never said the control knob was loose only that the gear drifts, nor that the arm started pointing to the wrong sector.

Therefore it's one end of the selector shaft or the other that's loose. First thing I would have done is hold the fork and try to move the selector. Like your Centec there should be no sideways forces produced by the gears though I suppose if the shafts are not quite parallel that might cause it.

Road diesel in the UK after some date in September is treated with an anti waxing agent that should keep the fuel fluid to -12*c. For conventional injection(not common rail) one could add up to 30% petrol to prevent waxing. Routing a COPPER fuel line into the warm(note warm) air flow before going into the filter or pump will help prevent waxing. Old 1905 peugeot/citroen diesels had an electric fuel heater, or a simple heat exchanger in the base of the filter housing. Noel.

My father used the gallon of petrol then fill up with diesel winter dodge otherwise it was a fan heater pointed at the filter for half an hour.

Does anyone else remember the line of lorries with fires under the tanks on the A1? I'm sure it aired on the news one winter.

It's likely to be worth whatever Station Road Steam could sell it for.

Stuart major beam castings £1240 + vat

Sells in fine condition £2850

Reeves Bolton castings £1244 + vat

sells maybe £4000 painted

Thread: Parallelism of carriage to spindle. Taper.

Hi Cedric,

I guess with a brand new lathe this is where your machine shop experience is no help.

This machine may not have been adjusted, only assembled. Someone recently on here had a loose headstock, others have had paint in the wrong place, gib strips bent or loose

You can't generalise or you get huge long replies with possible fixes buried in the detail. Until you tell us what you have done.

Thread: High Tensile Steel Question
27/12/2022 11:45:15

Perhaps given the scale and unknown tightening torque required might this thread be better posted on the Traction Talk forum where the bigger engines live?

To me high tensile means rolled threads not cut and a requirement for a specific tightening torque.

I don't think so Dave. Islandline is now re-engineered overground stock from Vivarail.

Changed only two years ago by the look of it

Still to be found in the wild on the Isle of Wight.

I've found steel takes way more time heating compared to copper. The skin is hot but the inside is not.

Having heated the work up once already all the oil has gone so if that was the issue the 2nd heating of the de blacked steel would have worked.

Suggest you use a scrap piece and heat the steel to a brighter red till the solder flows and note the colour required.

I can't imagine the reason for switching on the mill with a dial gauge on the spindle.

Vibration can come from the belts

Thread: Drive Dogs etc
20/12/2022 17:58:07

Before scroll chucks I would imagine a cup with 3 or 4 bolts in it to drive the work for drilling the first centre.

There was a humungus 4 to 5 foot faceplate lathe in the old B'ham science museum on Newhall St that 90 angle brackets with bolts to hold the work.

PS I like Huskies too, but I can't manage a whole one.

Myford contracted out the making of their QCTP to a fellow in the west country, they had a W stamped on them. I met him and bought some Myford parts a while ago ! This was when Myford were still ar Beeston. There MAY have been other contractors doing this work as well. Noel.
