All seems a bit daft to me. Surely if a poster gives sufficient hints so that a reader knows which company he is referring to then he may as well give the proper name and be done with it.

Thread: Windows 10 forced upgrade

The fibre cabling was installed here in this part of Gloucester about 20 years ago and run by United Artists, then Blueyonder and now Virgin. Mine is fibre optic right to the modem and is never less than 100 Mbs.

As all internet suppliers go through BT, .........

Virgin and other fibre optic cable suppliers don't.

Thread: what price to sell boxford lathe
16/07/2016 09:22:02

They have been listed on eBay at all sorts of prices but the average actual selling price is around £1000. Having a variable speed controller fitted may increase the value a bit.

I can't either.

Thread: Lathe help!!
11/07/2016 21:42:17

I'm a very late starter to metal working although I have had a wood workshop and wood lathes for many years.

I bought a secondhand 9 x 20 which must have been one of the first imported as it has only a "Made In China by Shaoxing Machine Works" label and has not been repainted and rebadged as many have by various importers.

Apart from beefing up the cross and compound slides and decreasing the overly strong clutch spring tension I've just used it and have no complaints. It works and is as accurate as I've ever needed.

Parts and spares are easily come by.

Thread: which camera?

Many years ago I used to shoot mostly on 35mm transparency film (slides) and prints made from those using Ilfochrome (cibachrome) are still unfaded and like new, even those that were framed and are hanging on walls.

Kinda the whole point of the thread. See thread title and skip if it bothers you.

It doesn't bother me Bandersnatch but I do find it amusing so I'll stay watching. wink

I really don't understand why instead of this continual moaning about MS folk just don't dump it and use another OS.

I did a long time ago.

Probably the citric acid content of the orange ingredient did the work.

It's a queen Vespa crabro - European Hornet. Only they survive the winter and then establish a new colony each year. Powerful sting but they are not usually aggressive unless provoked.

Thread: 9x20 lathe belt problems
28/05/2016 11:24:30

No really cheap answer that I've ever found. eBay item 29167110950 from Denmark at about £11 including shipping is about the cheapest I can find at the moment. They are cheaper in the US but shipping is too expensive.

Reducing the tension of the long spring by fitting a short S link at the bottom end fixing point will help.

Thread: Lathe belt broken
24/05/2016 20:05:22

Sounds like the pulleys are out of alignment.

24/05/2016 18:36:45

The Quality Bearings belt is a remarkable low price!

Robert,

To stop breaking the belt reduce the tension on that massive spring. I put 1" loop made from 1/8" welding rod between the fixing point and the end of the spring. Haven't broken a belt since.

Why not stick (?) to Devcon? eBay item 121376311098 at £13.99 (inc. p/p) for 250ml seems reasonably priced compared to other products.

I caught out much the same way. Bought a bundle of what I thought were 1/4" brass rods only to find that they were steel with a thin brass outer shell and brass finials.

I have an old 3 wheeler bs that has a very slow speed and have fitted a M42 Bi-Metal Blade. It cuts anything and everything. Okay not ideal for large sections but it copes. I use it mainly for thick sheet brass which it slices through with ease and, of course, I can cut complicated shapes not just limited to straight cuts.

Thread: Drilling brass
03/05/2016 14:13:46

Years ago when drilling brass I had the mother of all snatches that scared me stiff. I made up a box of drills and with a diamond file took all the rake of the cutting edges. No trouble since.

PayPal charge nothing for a "Gift" transfer and about 4% otherwise.

I beg to differ, Paypal ALWAYS make a charge for handling your money, what changes is WHO they charge. Fees for a normal Paypal payment are borne by the recipient, whilst the sender pays the fees for Paypal gift.

Twice I have sent money to a relative in Australia as a "Gift" and no charges were made to me or the recipient.
