I have broken my belt on a 9x20 lathe, recommended size Gates vm 710, but its far to small, I actually snapped it trying to put it on. Has anyone know the correct size for this lathe and a good place to buy from. Tried Quality Bearings but they sent out Z710 belts totally wrong shape. Problem with these lathes is the cost of replacement belts after a lack of concentration, and where to find one not at great cost.

No really cheap answer that I've ever found. eBay item 29167110950 from Denmark at about £11 including shipping is about the cheapest I can find at the moment. They are cheaper in the US but shipping is too expensive.

Reducing the tension of the long spring by fitting a short S link at the bottom end fixing point will help.

Scroll through this long page.
