Thread: Parting Off Blues |

Yep Ian I have some parters made from m/c hacksaw blades its what my Gramps used although I have not tried one yet, I did like the recent post where someone used a slitting saw, might try that later long as I can clear swarf, I think firm but not heavy handed on feed is the order of the day, perhaps grinding every other tooth out on the saw would help Mick |

My best parting tool is made from the old fashioned carbon steel, have quite a few carbon steel tools and actually like them, mostly hss for me though, do not like inserts of any description apart from cost and to me bewildering choice my lathe has a top speed of 450 rpm so doesn't run fast enough, I machine small diameters at this speed,or lower, and get a perfectly acceptable finish using hand feed Mick |

I have a warco 14, not as big as your wm16. Managed to slot 12 toolholders using a 1/2" roughing endmill without any problems Mick |
Thread: Lathe start-up speed best practice. |
07/12/2017 18:50:10 |
I have a clutch on mine ,on start up motor just driving itself really, when up to speed ( which only takes a millisecond ) operate clutch and hey ho off we go, clutch means I can stop the motion without turning motor on and off all the time. Mine is an older m/c not sure what more modern types have Mick |

Some years ago I used to use a Burma Boring Bar which also had an attachment for boring single cylinder motorcycle engines, nice piece of kit Mick |
Thread: Bench grinders |

The toolrest is adjustable and can be slid nearer the wheel, it just happens to pulled back and would be advanced when grinding, it is just a mock up design for a more robust rest which I am making, thanks for your concern though, not sure about bolting down because it is to the bed which weighs about a hundredweight, anything else to criticise? Always keen to learn and I'm sure you have my welfare at heart Mick |

I still have my wheelspanner for operating valves which I made 55 years ago Mick |

Fair comment will see if I can improve the guard. Will be interesting to see comments on impact ratings we,do put our faith in them Mick |
24/11/2017 20:04:20 |
Perhaps I should add a guard to front, in mitigation I always wear a full face visor |

Thanks Simon for your detailed reply, I have a white cup 4" at one end and fit diamond cups at the other, the supplied guards are awkward to fit around the cup so have made my own not sure if it is adequate, will take a pic Mick |

Sorry these A's keep appearing, I have no control Mick |
Thread: Block, Strap, Gib and Cotter |

In my apprenticeship we fitted a "Tee Block" and an" Octogen" into a block of mild steel 1" thick using only bench tools can't remember how many fits there were for each one but they were numerous. Mine were exhibited in a model engineering exhibition (my Gramps was the Chairman). There were some apprentices from Winfrith Nuclear est. there who could not believe I had't used machines, I explained that at sea machines were usually absent although a lathe was usually carried Mick |

Hi Folks, Q1--- do diamond grinding wheels require a guard as per a stone wheel? Q2-- any tricks to hold spindle when tightening nuts, there is nothing obvious      On the Spindle and holding one end nut whilst tightening the other just        undoes the held nut, I suspect there is a simple way but I'm too daft to        see it Mick |
Thread: Harold Halls QCTP |
16/11/2017 21:54:25 |
I am contacting Harold tomorrow will see what he says , I have made a few of his designs and been well pleased with the results, eg endmill sharpening jig/ dividing head/graduating tool for marking indicator dials and jigs for sharpening lathe tools etc on grinding head. If he is happy for me to write it up will give it a go,will probably need some advice is there some advice somewhere? I am grateful that there are people like Harold that are talented that can inspire and encourage people such as myself Mick |
16/11/2017 21:31:34 |
Thanks Neil,I'm not sure its right to profit from someone else's design and Harold has extensive instuctions on his website, but if anyone else is making a set and wants some help I am happy to oblige Mick |
