Thread: North Korean rail gauge
12/09/2023 19:02:45

How has Kin Jong Un’s train managed to run from standard gauge North Korea to 5ft gauge Russia? Does it have convertible bogies?

Thread: Stated thread depth never works for me.
02/08/2023 16:53:55

At the risk of insulting you - is your cross slide graduated in depth of cut, or reduction in diameter? Mine is the latter, so I would have to double the value to achieve the correct depth.

Thread: Trying to comprehend the Impact Energy
12/07/2023 22:41:53

We had a Charpy tester on a training ship I was on as an engineer cadet. Not sure what effect a pitching ship would have had on the accuracy , but it was fun to watch. Certainly less tense than waiting for the break on a tensile tester.

Does a Men’s Shed count as a commercial place? Asking for a friend.

Thread: One stroke or two?
11/07/2023 07:52:14

It’s an opposed piston two stroke, but with a “wavy thing” rather than a crankshaft. I can’t imagine it has as much torque as a crankshaft engine.

Thread: Hearing aids - NHS or private?
06/07/2023 08:29:13

I have had an NHS aid for about four years. It works for me, and I happy to have free batteries, and the knowledge that it will be replaced for free if it breaks.

Thread: Steel cut to length
19/06/2023 10:42:16

Sometimes there are bar ends from auto lathes on eBay at reasonable prices.

Thread: Battery powered lawn mowers?
21/04/2023 17:06:23

If you go for Makita, it is sometimes cheaper to buy the bare mower, and buy a Makita drill, 2 off 5ah batteries and a charger from Screwfix or Toolstation. Effectively you get a free drill, although the charger will a single battery rather than a double. That’s what I did.

Thread: machine-dro kits
13/04/2023 15:41:09

I fitted a 3-axis to my Warco WM14 last year - no problems, and plenty of spare screws etc. I’m really pleased I went for the 3-axis. The kit is for the Chester equivalent, and fitted the Warco perfectly.

Thread: Infrastructure Engineering

I can’t find anything about Toyota not making electric cars. They have said that they won’t invest in the U.K. to make EVs, and that they are reviewing their global strategy, because they are finding that Tesla are better than them at manufacturing, and they need to catch up. That is quite an admission from the company that virtually invented modern volume production.

Thread: Geometer
16/03/2023 17:47:01

The more I read the Beginner’s Workshop articles by Geometer, the more I feel that they were written more than half a century ago. I would say they were written in the sixties, or even earlier. For example, this month’s shows a side valve engine, which would have been an anachronism in 1973. The drawings have a very old-fashioned feel to them.

Thread: Tracy Tools
14/03/2023 13:37:55

I have just received a delivery from Tracy Tools, and realised that I had specified the wrong pitch for one of the ME dies, When I contacted them to ask about how to exchange the die for the correct one, they said that as a valued customer, I could keep it, and they would send the replacement free of charge! No connection, etc, just a happy bunny.

Thread: Record number '0' Vice - 2 1/2" vice - Fibregrip Jaw covers.
06/03/2023 08:28:58

I bought a 3 inch pair and milled them down to size. They were Warco I think, and the magnets weren’t in the milling zone.

Thread: WM180 4-jaw
25/02/2023 15:48:39

And although the chucks are symmetric, the holes on the flange are not, so I suspect it would vibrate even without a chuck if I tried it.

This is my four-jaw:

On my WM180 the spindle flange is drilled with 6 holes, so it will take my 3 jaw (three holes) and my 4 jaw (four holes) directly, so no backplate is involved. My collet chuck is the same. However, the irregular spacing of the six holes is probably the reason for the vibration at high speeds.

Thread: Microsft 'Edge'
19/02/2023 10:52:41

On my thirteen year old pc I doubled the RAM from 6Gb to 12Gb and it transformed the machine. I use duck duck go as my search engine, and either Safari or Edge as my browser. Certainly MS are always trying to make Bing my default search engine, and it annoyingly now defaults to it when you open a new tab - I don’t think you can change this.

Thread: Editorial Musings

A bit revolutionary I know, but is an online archive an option? It would require the same digital files, but not need a physical DVD to be sent out. I’m not sure I will buy another DVD player when when my current one dies.

Thread: Ford Production Line (with a difference)

Great song, and great video (film?). But surely Mustang Sally would be more appropriate, even if it wasn’t Motown.
