Thread: Yet another 'which mill shall I buy' |
12/11/2019 16:14:40 |
The Alex vertical head is 4mt, the original draw bar is S20, I'm getting quite proficient at cutting it, both internal and external. I've done allsorts on mine, if you mount off the vertical where the table fits you can bore all the way to the floor!! Point to note when using a vfd you will still be changing belts as you lose torque, Richard

I had a Bridgeport but due to low height of workshop I could only put it in one place, simply didn't work. I sold it, done some research and got an old Alexander toolmaster, Deckel FP1 copy, best thing I ever did, you really can do about everything with it, yes they have problems eg not a lot of room on the Z axis above the table but there's always a way around it. Thread: What lathes have you had? |
23/07/2019 20:59:48 |
During the machining part of my apprenticeship we used many machines, Now I've got space we have amongst other things!! Lathes - SWMBO said I'm always buying rubbish!! A Schaublin with no tail stock or lead screw, sold for a Mk 2 Raglan Little John, sold for a Emco Maximat standard 3000 with milling head, sold for Boxford CUD, sold for Harrison M250 still got it Milling machines Bridgeport belt head, no space sold for Amolco cnc modified running mach 3, too small sold for George Alexander tool master, still got it... Fantastic What we have now is the most capable machines we can get in the space we have. |

Thread: Horizontal Bandsaw - Final Thoughts |
10/06/2019 08:17:28 |
Hi, I settled on the Axminster a year ago as it popped up on ebay hardly used. I agree with Perko. I often use it vertically, however you do need to make a larger rest as the one supplied is pitiful, there is a fair bit of room around the rest in the horizontal position, so you can leave a larger rest attached. Setting up can be a challenge, but what I have discovered is it is mostly down to careful setting with a quality blade, Richard |

Thread: Cast Iron For Boxford Change Gears? |
21/05/2019 21:45:45 |
If you look at the lathes UK website there is a calculator, it allows you to input your available gears and give you combinations with percentage errors. This allows you to make an informed choice. My CUD now sold had a metric lead screw, I used to cut imperial threads successfully using this method. Richard |

Thread: Setting Milling-machine Vice |
05/05/2019 11:13:20 |
A quick search you tube, might help? There are a lot of similar tips, Richard |
05/05/2019 08:44:38 |
If you keep one bolt on the vice tighter than the other it will act as a pivot and you will be able to set it parallel very quickly, No need for anything else, Richard |
Thread: Stainless Steel Metric Fasteners |

Just be careful the standard for stainless steel is a lot lower than normal 8.8 Got caught out many years ago when making roll cages for competition. Richard |

I made one, based on the Randy Richard's design he has a channel on YouTube. It works brilliantly and uses a 60 degree carbide lathe tool insert. Check out his channel Richard |
Thread: What would one use this adaptor for? |

It's a morse taper screw in adapter for a shell mill holder/face mill or such like. Richard |
Thread: Boxford tool post |
24/03/2019 20:52:02 |
My 2 pence worth!! Had a original Dixon badged Boxford on my CUD, couldn't fault it apart from the price. Have now got a clone wedge type size B/250 on a Harrison M250, brilliant with the benefit of being able to make your own tool holders, because of the wedge you have more of a tolerance when using cloned tool holders. There is a fair bit of info about wedge v piston. Check the sizes, I think a B will be a bit big, probably an A would be better. Richard |
Thread: Boxford AUD needing a new Motor |
06/03/2019 21:09:59 |
Hi Pete, I've just moved on from a single phase CUD, if I kept it I was planning 3 phase. I think you'll find reversible single phase more than the 3 phase motor. Also you won't have the speed control. The finish is meant to be better with 3 phase as well.!! |
