Thread: Lots of Bearing Races to dispose of? |
06/07/2017 17:16:47 |
Ketan, many thanks, point taken! Quite a bit of work but will have a go. What is the 2RS/zz ? is that on the bearings? Are there different types of seals and shields please? I guess that I was thinking that someone may have a project thaty might fit the bearings I have, a kind of cart before the horse deal! I'll post some pics later anyway. Cheers. Martin |

Hi All, I have a large box of new unused bearings of all types and sizes that came in a lot from a house clearance guy I deal with. As you probably know we run a small EBay business and I have listed a few with very little response. They are going to be a real pain to describe in detail and frankly I cannot be bothered with them! I will keep some of the smaller sizes for odd jobs but the rest are in the way.. So if anyone has a particular need for any bearing races I can offer members on here some for free paying only postage. Really looking here to help out someone with a need for a project etc. Happy to rummage through them to satisfy a need for a particular type or size but do not know a lot about the ins and outs of bearings in detail! Hopefully this might help someone out. If there is any interest I can post a general photo or two to show what is there. If any of the mods feel that this is an inappropriate posting please feel free to delete. Cheers, Martin |

Also John Rudd, Brian Wood, Ian Parkin, Jason B among others, all of whom have all gone well out of their way away from the forum to be very helpful to a very inexperienced newcomer and have taken on small jobs that were beyond me, with me learning along the way. Many thanks to all of you! Regards, Martin |

Ketan, I totally second your views above, Michael has often been of huge help to me and I shall certainly miss his contributions. While he is no stranger to pedantry, I really value most of his insights and humour and IMHO the forum will be a lesser place for his absence. Martin |

Thread: Sheet metal roller, ideas? |
14/06/2017 09:28:43 |
This piqued my interest! How hard would it be to produce small thin sheet metal (brass or steel) cones of about the size of an old type oil can? 3-4" high and base diameter about 2 1/2" or so? These seem to have a rolled seam or soldered seam with a circular sheet metal bottom soldered in. I have a LARGE stock of old damaged oil cans of all sizes with perfectly serviceable brass spouts, nozzles and caps etc which could be used for the tops etc. Cheers, Martin |

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017) |

Chris Gill: The 'tank cutter' is NOT for wood or metal, leather only. For making washers and sealing rings for equipment, pumps mainly but any old time gasket use. Obviously one cutter is wrong way round or put there to be out of the way for a single cut ring etc We get LOADS of these and there are many different designs, one customer of ours in the USA has about 40 odd different ones. They are usually marked with makers name if you look carefully, WYNN TIMMINS is a common UK one. Again there are many variants of the leather cased tapes, the most common makers being Rabone, (Hockley Abbey is one of their trade marks) and Chesterman. Lufkin, LS Starrett of USA also made them among others, Davis being the rarest USA type. Also quite collectable but of little value in the common forms. The valuable ones are marked for cricket pitches and tennis courts and very rarely bowling greens. Smaller sizes often have steel tapes which if not rusty are more desirable. Nice finds. Leather is often worked or rolled wet and takes a 'set' and becomes hard when dried out. Bit like me..... Martin |

"Found my Kennedy at an auction described as a 'firewood kindling cutter', got it for £7 + commission!" A bit like describing a lathe as a pencil sharpener. The best auction mis description I ever had was a lot consisting of a cased microscope and "wooden cased sectioned central heating valves", got it for £70 +comm. The microscope was a nice Zeiss which gave me a decent profit on the lot but the 'central heating valves' were a beautiful and very rare velvet lined mahogany cased set of Victorian sectioned experimental Artillery Fuze heads from about the Boer war era. They went bonkers when I took them to the Armoury at Lulworth Camp to find out about them, sent photos to the War Museum; got an old retired armourer to come in and look at them, he said he'd never seen the like etc etc. Finally made nearly £900 on EBay and the buyer drove from Yorkshire to me in Dorset as he would not trust them to any form of courier, did not even stop for a cup of tea, straight back home! Said he would have been happy to bid a lot moe for them. Mind youI have known of Yorkshire men who get nosebleeds if they come further south than Leeds! |

Eric, £82 is not dear IMHO, I have turned down £130 for mine as I will probably never find another. I get a kick out of drinking a cuppa while watching it do its thing on a big chunk of material, a bit like watching a shaper. Cheers, Martin |

Found my Kennedy at an auction described as a 'firewood kindling cutter', got it for £7 + commission! Cleaned it up and it is one of my most used tools. Odd thing was, about a week before I bought a brand new WARCO bandsaw which now gets zero use! Funny old world! Cheers, Martin |
