Hi All, Sitting at home last evening with the French doors open, suddenly heard an aircraft noise close by and then two of the strangest aircraft I have ever seen circled our village at a REALLY low altitude making hardly any noise compared to the normal stuff we see and hear. They had two ENORMOUS propellers and a squat fuselage, the props looked totally out of proportion to the rest of the craft. Did not make out the markings sadly. They circled our immediate area for about 5 mins and then flew off. I would say that they were only 200-300 feet high, so super low. Someone said that there is a warship in Weymouth Bay buy have not checked. Weirdest thing I ever saw! Martin |

Hi All, The project proceeds apace, quite slowly as we have other stuff to get on with at the same tiem so am doing a bit here and there, finshing some of the smaller components and getting ready to deal with the gearbox and power x feed. Many thanks to Brian Wood for letting me have the gearbox manual and some sound advice! Not looking forward to cleaning up all those alloy castings, some are not so good..! Cheers,Martin |

OK, Thanks! What about sound quality? Not looking for some super HiFi just pleasant listening quality. It apparently has an aux audio out so is there any point in getting a decent external speaker of better quality perhaps? If so, any suggestions please. I cannot see myself (or us) getting paranoid about someone somewhere listening , if thats all they have to do I pity them having to listen to us two banging on about this or that! Cheers, Martin |

Hi all, Heard one of these at a friends house recently and my missus loves her music. Thinking about getting her one, but wonder how useful it is for other stuff, certainly seems a popular toy!. Does anyone here have one? If so what are their impressions of it please? Cheers, Martin |
Thread: Lifting or hoisting a Myford Super 7 |

Just done a S7B on a stand inside a really tiny dark shed with no room either end and a rotten wooden floor. Had a friend to help but it was an absolute b*****d to do. Could not remove the motor pulley to get motor off so had to cut the belt and remove the entire rear casting, nuts solid and very hard to get at the last rounded off one under the motor. Even with tthat lot off it was still heavy going to get it into a rubber wheelbarrow! 100 feet on grass to the van! Said wheelbarrow has now gone to the place where squashed wheelbarrows reside! I think the gearbox and power xfeed saddle add a lot of weight in themselves. I can do a bare ML7 on my own, not easy but doable! Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, First off, many thanks to the kind people who have sent me pdf and other info here which will prove invaluable when I get this all cleaned up ready to go back together. As you will see from the pics no small task but better than it all ending up in a skip! I am going to sort the Record Turning lathe first as that is easy and will give me a bit of space, cannot believe how heavy those stainless bars are! I have refinished the cabinet tray using my favourite method of quick rotary sanding, heavy wipe down with lots of acetone, then a liberal coat of KURUST, followed by 2 coats of MYFORD Grey mixed up to RAL 7011 at my local paint shop, (WAY cheaper than from Myford!), about £11 a litre which usually lasts me forever but possibly not on this job! Cheers, Martin |

Mmmmmm, sounds complicated! Way too tired to get my head round this tonight, will study what you have said tomorrow. Would anyone by any chance have the relevant pages from the manual that I could have or buy please? Many thanks, Martin |

Hi all, Its been a funny old couple of days! Got a call from an estate agent I know asking did I want a couple of old woodworking lathes in very dirty condition and some other 'junk' from a property they were going to level, if not it was all going in the skip. Got to this really disgusting old shed and sure enough there was a RECORD Power Wood lathe with specially made solid stainless short bars. Loads of chucks and adapters and turning tools some good some rubbish. Big bin of delrin, nylo, acetate 7 pen blanks and bowl turning blanks and lots of really nice part finished turning projects from someone of real skill. The other 'wood' lathe was a Super 7B with gearbox and power cross feed on original stand in really dirty scuzzy condition but a 1978 serial number from the old manual that is with it. Came back with some help and we had to cut the drive belt and remove the entire rear casting with the motor, clutch and gubbins as we could not get the motor pulley free after an hour trying everything. All this is virtually in the dark and zero room to move! Got the bits to a hire van in a rubber wheel barrow, (now defunct!) and managed to really pull a muscle in my arm. The cabinet was full of accessories, again in poor cosmetic condition but all there, 4 chucks, both steadies, faceplates, 2MT chucks, loads of carbide insert tooling, micrometers etc. Great haul! Got it all home and started to pick through it and it is not so bad as it looked, gearbox seems a bit seized up and there is a weird indexing thing on the bull wheel under the belt cover that is solid. Got the tail stock off all OK but the saddle has power cross feed and I heard somewhere that you have to be really careful how it is removed, the manual has that bit destroyed by mice! Any advice on this would be most welcome please. This will be a long project getting this back into some sort of order but will enjoy the rescue attempt. Will post a pic or two tomorrow if I can lift the camera! Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Re sextant position accuracy, having done 5 Atlantic crossings in small sailboats (43-66 feet) I got fairly good with a sextant but never ever got better than 3-5 or so miles, usually earer 7-10 miles. I was able to sometimes check positions on the early trips with the odd passing ship and later against GPS 1 mile out in a 5/6 is fanatastic accuracy! Cheers Martin |

Many marine compasses have large iron balls either side of the binnacle to reduce/adjust the localised magnetic forces and promote a more accurate compass reading. Most boats will have a table showing the error for all significant points of the boats heading aftre the boat has been 'swung ' at anchor and readings noted. That without getting into 'variation' and chartwork! Cheers, Martin |

Thread: ME production problems, delivery problems or Canada post? |

Hi All, FWIW there have been a spate of long / late delivereies to Canada for our EBay items lately, up to 5 weeks for AIRMAIL. It would seem that both USPS and Canada Post arbitrarily send some item surface mail and do not tell the sender. This leads to us refunding, then item finally arrives etc, guess how often the buyer lets us know and repays?.... Grrrrr! Martin |
