Got a call from an estate agent I know asking did I want a couple of old woodworking lathes in very dirty condition and some other 'junk' from a property they were going to level, if not it was all going in the skip. Got to this really disgusting old shed and sure enough there was a RECORD Power Wood lathe with specially made solid stainless short bars. Loads of chucks and adapters and turning tools some good some rubbish. Big bin of delrin, nylo, acetate 7 pen blanks and bowl turning blanks and lots of really nice part finished turning projects from someone of real skill. The other 'wood' lathe was a Super 7B with gearbox and power cross feed on original stand in really dirty scuzzy condition but a 1978 serial number from the old manual that is with it. Came back with some help and we had to cut the drive belt and remove the entire rear casting with the motor, clutch and gubbins as we could not get the motor pulley free after an hour trying everything. All this is virtually in the dark and zero room to move! Got the bits to a hire van in a rubber wheel barrow, (now defunct!) and managed to really pull a muscle in my arm. The cabinet was full of accessories, again in poor cosmetic condition but all there, 4 chucks, both steadies, faceplates, 2MT chucks, loads of carbide insert tooling, micrometers etc. Great haul! Got it all home and started to pick through it and it is not so bad as it looked, gearbox seems a bit seized up and there is a weird indexing thing on the bull wheel under the belt cover that is solid. Got the tail stock off all OK but the saddle has power cross feed and I heard somewhere that you have to be really careful how it is removed, the manual has that bit destroyed by mice! Any advice on this would be most welcome please. This will be a long project getting this back into some sort of order but will enjoy the rescue attempt. 1504 forum posts 142 photos | Martin The basic advice is DON'T UNSCREW the feedscrew from the feednut, but bring the slide forward so the front is level with the saddle, then remove the screws holding the feednut to the front of the slide, then the screws holding the end bracket, and remove the whole lot together. The drive gear will be on the feedscrew behind the feednut. If you unscrew it from the feednut then you will lose the drive gear and it will be a bugger to get back. |

3681 forum posts 70 photos | The leadscrew passes through a keyed gear that drives the cross feed. Remove gearbox completely and tailstock end L/S support, withdraw leadscrew to the left. You can remove carriage complete or you can break that down as well, remove the apron after removing the cross feed leadscrew. Only niggle is when you rebuild and have to engage the cross feed leadscrew in the key in the small drive gear you will see on top of the carriage. But that is all for later when cleaned etc!! To replace the cross slide on a power cross feed Super7, slide on the cross slide until the FEED screw engages with the nut, stop when resistance is felt, turn LEAD screw handle whilst gently pulling power cross feed button until it pops out. Turn LEAD screw handle whilst gently turning CROSS feed, keep turning LEAD screw handle until FEED screw lines up with the keyway, push button in and screw FEED screw in. It sounds complicated but it's all done by feel, after you've done it a couple of times it's easy and much faster than taking everything apart to get the cross slide on. ![]() 1129 forum posts 1 photos | Hi All, First off, many thanks to the kind people who have sent me pdf and other info here which will prove invaluable when I get this all cleaned up ready to go back together. As you will see from the pics no small task but better than it all ending up in a skip! I am going to sort the Record Turning lathe first as that is easy and will give me a bit of space, cannot believe how heavy those stainless bars are! I have refinished the cabinet tray using my favourite method of quick rotary sanding, heavy wipe down with lots of acetone, then a liberal coat of KURUST, followed by 2 coats of MYFORD Grey mixed up to RAL 7011 at my local paint shop, (WAY cheaper than from Myford!), about £11 a litre which usually lasts me forever but possibly not on this job! Many thanks to Brian Wood for letting me have the gearbox manual and some sound advice! Not looking forward to cleaning up all those alloy castings, some are not so good..! Cheers,Martin |
