Anyone else not been getting e-mail notifications of private messages?

I'm not! And some people are not getting password reset emails either

Looking into it

Password reset emails never have been reliable. MTM thought many get blocked as spam.

I'd agree with Tim, except the finish with inkjet inks should be waterproof, assuming you seal the anodising by boiling or with proprietary sealer.

I anodised this laser collimator with gold and black dies from Gateros Plating.

Thread: STAN BRAY
21/06/2022 11:15:33

(I just moved my post, I hadn't spotted Howard's thread.)

21/06/2022 11:13:58

I'm sad to report that, following a brief illness, Stan Bray passed away at home last Saturday morning, at the age of 97.

Stan was a regular contributor to Model Engineer (and Model Boats). He was the person who came up with the idea for Model Engineers' Workshop magazine and it's first editor. His original expectation was that it would be a few specials, but it took off, and we have a lot to thank him for. He was an active hobbyist and model engineer right up to the end.

Rest in peace, Stan.

Not sure how you can do that Neil as they all used to be there so adding more may be difficultwink 2

I may be sharper than some people think.

We will hopefully be able to populate the MEW archive with more issues than in the past.

I don't know if there will be some gaps, but we will do our best.

Is the Galaxy S2 set to a different level of security?

To be honest, I struggle to manage settings on my Lenovo tablet, which is also Android.

Trouble is, it's also a very good solvent for grease and oil, so by clearing them out and just leaving a thin film it can create long term lubrication issues.

Oh! and one final thing, you may have heard of automatic bed leveling, there is no such thing, it is nothing more than a software fudge

Which is bad why?

There are many approaches to automatic bed levelling. The best systems use steppers to level the bed.

In my experience, mount your printer on a solid base and don't move it around. Levelling becomes an 'only if you disturb the setup' or 'my extruder tip is badly worn' exercise.

Thread: 2020 Had my full size flash steam engine running

Good heavens!

You don't need the steam engine, you've got a full functional ramjet right there...

I have a growing interest in art and craft. I recently was introduced to 3D printing by a colleague and loved it. My question is which 3D printer should I get to jumpstart my newfound passion.
Thanks

Assuming you want the "squeeze plastic filament out through a hotend in layers" type of printer, then my advice is don't, they are all rubbish laugh

Just to balance with that, I have an FDM printer and have made hundreds of prints, many of which are still functioning, for example I have a Yagi antenna that is held together by PLA parts and is 5+ years old. My electric toothbrush lives on a PLA stand to stop it making toothpaste rings on the shelf. This has survived years of daily wetting and washing. I have decorative items, model parts, jigs and even a couple of functioning telescopes with lots of 3D printed parts.

Personally i am past caring about how much info about me gets into the public domain. I already have a whole chapter about me in a book about early rock 'n' roll groups, and more to come on that subject.

Do tell!

A very long story Neil, so i will give you the very short version.

Maybe one day, I'll buy you a beer and you can give me the long version! I've met a few roadcrew and their tales are worth hearing

Thread: Can't access MEW archive any more

Hello folks,

This has already been answered here:

FORUM DOWNTIME AND RESULTING ISSUES REPORTING

The message from Darren about the IDs is:

" We are planning to send an email to everyone with Customer IDs. Currently, the only way to get it is from the cover sheet that gets posted with the magazine, or by emailing or calling customer services: 01507 529529 - [email protected] "

However, he has added in a later post:

" it's not working. Sorry if I wasn't clear earlier - we are working on it now and hopefully it will be up and running in the next few days "

Sorry for the inconvenience, it will be working soon.

Thread: Looking at a new resin 3D printer
15/06/2022 14:56:29

I would be really interested to see reviews of 3D printers in MEW, anyone interested in reviewing their printer (or any other workshop equipment), please contact me.

I particularly would like to see 'this is a good piece of kit and why' reviews rather than 'this is useless' ones. Reviews by genuine users that signpost good kit are far more useful to readers.
