Thread: Writing articles for MEW |
05/08/2022 13:45:24 |
Thanks Geoff, Yes, that sort of 'how to' guide is another good choice for a short article. Also, short articles can explore less 'core' issues, such as one we had recently on replacing mother-of-pearl in a chair (nothing's new though, looking through a 1920s issue of Model Engineer I found a very similar article but on ivory rather than mother-of-pearl). We have some great well-established contributors to MEW, but are always pleased to see articles from new faces. Looking at what material I have lined up for future issues, I notice that there isn't as much that will come out as 1-3 pages long. These shorter articles are really valuable as without them, it is much more difficult to get a good page layout and achieve a balance of different content in each issue. Writing a shorter article is an ideal way to get started with contributing to the magazine. For a single page, around 4-500 words and 2 to 4 good photos is plenty. That's a good-sized post here on the forum, not a massive essay! A 3-page article with a good balance of pictures and text might be 1,500 words and 9 photos. So don't think writing for the magazine is a mammoth task. Nearly all our contributors are hobbyists and readers, just like you. If you have made, repaired or altered something for your workshop, or have some tips, skills or advice to pass on, why not have a go at writing a short article? In the next week or so I will have completed revision of the new Author Pack, with simplified advice for contributors. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I will reply with one when they are ready. Thanks, Neil

What is it about British people complaining about the weather? 12 months of the year complaining about the rain, then we get half an inch of snow and people behave like it's a 6 foot snow storm, then we get a couple of weeks of nice weather and......the complaining starts again, stick a couple of beers in the fridge and enjoy it. As for the global warming, we were taught at school global warming would melt the ice, which would then cool the Gulf stream down making western Europe a bit cooler with other parts of the world getting warmer, has the theory changed since then? No, ironically, the failure of the North atlantic conveyor and an ice zge remains a possibility. |
Thread: 2022 Stevenson Trophy Competition |
19/07/2022 11:57:35 |
Naturally, have to have some formal rules for the competition, these are: All entries must be a piece of practical workshop equipment i.e. a tool, jig, fixture or a modification to or accessory for an existing piece of equipment. One entry per person. All entries to the competition must be materially your own work (commercial parts etc. are allowable but please be clear about what these are) and not have been entered to the competition before. A short list of entries will be selected by the competition organisers, a group of people who knew John and are familiar with his views on workshop equipment. Criteria for inclusion on the shortlist will be that the tooling is practical and capable of being used for accurate work in a home workshop setting. It should demonstrate ingenuity, good design, economical use of materials and be appropriately finished for its function. By entering you confirm your permission to feature the entry in the magazines or on the forum. If practical, you may be invited to display your entry at a model engineering exhibition in the future. The winner will be selected by a popular online vote by forum members. Readers who join the forum in order to vote will be allowed to do so. Voting will be strictly one vote per person. In the event that the judges consider invalid votes have been cast or that an attempt has been made to unduly influence the result of the vote any questionable votes will be disregarded, or entries may be disqualified. The trophy will remain the property of the competition organisers. The winner will take responsibility for ensuring safekeeping of the trophy until the next exhibition. The trophy must be returned in good condition, in the supplied packaging, in good time for award to the winner of the subsequent competition. The winner may arrange for their name and the year of the award to be professionally engraved on the base of the trophy at their own cost. No alternative prizes, cash payments or awards will be made. In all matters relating to the competition, decisions made by the organisers are final. |

The John Stevenson Trophy 2022 Many readers and forum members will remember John Stevenson, a contributor to MEW but best known for his larger-than life presence on the Model Engineer forum. Funded by many donations in his memory, the Stevenson Cup was first awarded in 2018. The cup is engraved “John Stevenson, 1948 – 2017, Remembered by his many friends” with “Awarded for Excellence in Practical and Useful Workshop Equipment” on the plinth. The John Stevenson Trophy is presented for just that, a well-made and usable piece of tooling, a modification to a machine or an accessory for a tool where the fact it works well is more important than making it look good. Unlike traditional judged trophies, we decided on a different approach to reflect John’s reticence about traditional competitions. After a call for nominations, a small panel of judges selected a shortlist, on which there was an online vote. Due to the disruption caused by Covid 19, the 2020 competition was greatly disrupted, and the competition did not run in 2021. The 2020 winner was Ian Johnson with his quick-change milling machine chuck. We have decided to once again make the competition open to all. Any reader or forum member may enter their own work. A short list will then be prepared by the organisers, so that award of the cup can be judged by a popular vote. Voting will be via a poll on the forum and open to all. The winner will be announced online and in the magazine. To enter, just send four good photographs of your entry with up to (about) 500 words of description by email to [email protected] no later than 31 August 2022. Thread: NEW LOOK COVER FOR MEW |
08/07/2022 14:21:43 |
It's interesting, because the changes were all specifically asked for on the grounds they encourage more sales. What's needed to ensure the future of the magazine is to attract new readers in a way that doesn't alienate existing ones. Are regular readers deeply concerned about things other than can they identify the magazine quickly, will it slip off the piles and can I find the issue number easily? Are the graphic layout changes just minor niggles or genuinely upsetting? Neil |
