Thread: What is This?
07/02/2020 09:21:54

Hi Guys,

Could it be a tool for adjusting magneto ignition points ?

Thread: Bench grinder troubleshooting

Hi Gene,

So very glad that you have found the break and repaired it. yes

The two part epoxy should be OK and dental floss would work to secure things.

Thread: How do I change the "default" lever angle on my Verdict DTI?
02/02/2020 11:44:57

Thanks Guys,

I'll call them tomorrow and see what they say.

My Verdict gauge is a ww2 1/2 thou one that was given to me by a mentor, it would be nice to get it fixed.

On mine there is the reversing lever ! Look near the bottom of the second page. It just swivels to alter the direction.

Just in case anybody knows, I dropped mine and the crystal bounced out and a piece chipped out of it, where to get a replacement.

Thanks.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

That blob of resin on the winding look awfully suspicious ! Could it be covering up a break in the wire ?

Thread: Rear parting

Beware of putting severe tension loads on T-slots. John Baron's toolpost obviously hasn't caused the T-slot to break (yet...), and he has fitted a reasonably long nut. I think I'd use the longest nut I could fit and would ideally spread the load by fixing the post to the nut in more than one location. The Myford/Thomas style above takes the T-slot protection further by spreading the load between two slots. The quick-change holder then adds flexibility and moves the forces outside the footprint of the post. Nothing is ideal, is it?

Actually I agree with you ! I've seen Myford's with the "T" slots broken out, and not just the rear ones. I deliberately made the "T" nut a good fit and it goes right across the bottom of the post.

I did get another piece of steel to make another support block that goes over the post and is secured in the next "T" slot, the idea being that it would effectively increase the footprint and add support. Unfortunately I have not got round to making it yet. Other projects have got in the way.

I made a "Norman patent" rear parting tool post and holder for my S7LB.

Thread: Left handed lathe.

I suppose that I'm lucky, I can happily use either hand. The only thing that I cannot do left handed is write properly, it tends to be back to front.

Thread: renew driving licence
01/02/2020 20:54:21

Hi Guys,

Just my 2pw here ! My motorcycle licence got left of mine when I renewed at 70. When I queried it, I got told that if I wanted to ride MC again I would have to retake the test !

Thread: Superglue chucks
01/02/2020 09:40:56

Hi Guys,

I've used various methods for sticking items to a wax chuck ! Super glue works well as does double sided tape. I've never had any problem removing parts. A sharp wood chisel works well and easily removes any glue or tape residue.

Soft parts like fibre ones, you do have to take a lot more care over removing. It you aren't very careful you can split the material. One dodge that I use with those is to stick a paper backing on first then the part. Hot water will soak off the paper.

Thread: Avast Anti virus

Hi Guys,

Whilst I agree that you should do everything possible to protect yourself, there are various ways that data can be gleaned ! For instance your IP address, unless you are using a VPN, will tell the web site exactly where abouts in the world you are, irrespective of what you might tell your computer.

Private browsing and never remembering history are fine, as long as you delete the cookies as well. And then there are the hidden data stores ! There maybe several dotted around, a particular web site will use the same place each time you visit, a group of them may all use the same place.

Emails sometimes have trackers and beacons hidden in them, its a very common way of discovering what machine and operating system you use.

Don't get me started about Android ! That platform was built to be a data collector !

Thread: Digital readout
31/01/2020 19:27:26

Hi Mick,

Thanks for your reply ! I've been meaning to get a DRO for the mill for quite a while. A readout and a couple of scales for that price seems particularly good value. Did you have any issues with fitting them ?

31/01/2020 15:15:15

Hi Mick,

Did you get two scales or just one ?

Thread: Lathe RPM meter not working
31/01/2020 15:02:16

Hi Guys,

On my machine the slotted opto sensor gets 5 volts to both the LED and detector via a 1.5 k resistor directly from the voltage regulator. The output to the speed display comes from the top of a 1 k resistor connected between the detector output and ground.

HTH.

Linux is in the main community supported so if a user hasn't the skills or has no need to there will be no driver from that source - one of the issues with open source software I'm afraid.

This is unfortunately a general problem and also why people wanting to move to Linux are told to check compatibility of the hardware that they are going to use with Linux.

Thread: Lathe RPM meter not working
31/01/2020 07:52:19

Hi Guys,

That makes sense, the opto device is the same as can be found in almost any printer made. From memory the LED in them requires around 5 ma which would mean that the PSU shown has the wrong value for the 10 k resistor if that is the correct circuit diagram.

If the wiring markings are as shown in the picture, is shouldn't be difficult to trace them back to the PSU.

If anyone near Cambridge (UK) wants a working, small Samsung laser printer I have one free if they want to come and pick it up. Send me a PRIVATE MESSAGE if interested. Don't reply here and no I won't post it.

Robert G8RPI.

I would take it but I'm up in North Yorkshire and don't get down there very often.

Thanks ! I'll check with them. It would be nice to keep the old thing going.

30/01/2020 19:23:01

Hi Guys,

I can confirm that Epson printers do not work properly with anything other than Windows !

HP and Samsung work just fine ! Actually I've recently retired a nearly 40 year old HP Deskjet 500 that still works perfectly in Linux, except that you can no longer get ink cartridges for them, and the last two I have finally given up the ghost.
