Thread: Moving to Australia - Moving Workshop Machines |

I would agree about the Brisbane humidity. Winters are great, can wear shorts and t-shirts all year. At least 6 months of the year it is too hot and humid. I am about 45Km north west of Brisbane. The humidity is a machine killer and a constant battle. It also means that outside is unpleasant for up to 6 months of the year. After 12 years the humidity is too much and we are in the process of moving south 1600Km to somewhere that has 4 seasons. Enjoy the move. |

The individual shims in the laminated shim packs are 0.003" each. I measured them about 6 months ago when I was reassembling my S7 after a bed regrind.

I find PocketMags prining is usually stable. To use it you need to create an account on their website, one created you add the subscription using the subscription number on this site. You can print up to 2 pages at a time.

Does anyone know the dimensins of both bushes as I need to replace them on my MkII 1958 S7 lathe. Whout the dimensions I would need to purchases from Myford. With the dimensions I may find some locally availlable bushes.

Joe Are you referring to viewing and printing using Pocket Mags (app (Win10) or in web bowser) or the Digital Archives on this site? The current version of the new Web Application that replaces flash, currently does not support printing but this is being worked on, refer this link https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=140397 For Pocket Mags view in a Web browser I print using Chrome and the Save to PDF option. You can only select up to 2 pages at a time. Peter |
Thread: Issue Reading New Digital Viewer |

Yes, I agree Pocket Mags have fixed the issue with Chrome. Now teh new archive viewer needs to be fixed. Peter |

Which means the archives will be unavailable to most people who keep their software up to date. Google removed Java support from Chrome several years ago as part of security updates, you cannot install the Java plugin for Chrome and run Java plugins. Yes, today Java is still used on websites, but that is running Java on the server. Firefox changed their plugin method about 18 months ago. They provided about 6 months ability to run legacy plugins. If the plugins were not rewritten they stopped working. That is the future of Flash it will die and we will not be able to access the archives. Surely, after they get the new viewer working someone can find a script on the web to convert from flash to the new viewer. Certainly there will be one to convert to HTML5, the Java replacement. Withthe PocketMags viewer I have had an email confirming that the is a bug in the current release preventing printing when using Chrome, the bug is confirmed. They are working to fix the printing bug.

To top it off PocketMags have updated the web viewer that allows you to read the digital editions on any computer. In the upgrade they have broken the print option when using the Chrome browser. Peter |
Thread: WHERE ARE THE SHAPER USERS ? |

18" Macson (Alba) sitting in the garage awaiting restoration. Will not be touched until we move house later in the year. Also an Adept No2, also needs work and is missing the handle, picked it up years ago. Anyone able to supply a sketch of the handle so that I can make a new one while we are selling this house. |

I use Pocket Mags in Chrome on Linux to print to PDF, there is a 2 page limit, but have found that they are best printed singly. If both are printed with no margins then you end you with an extra blank page, usually the last, but not always, and sometimes the pages are swapped. Simpler is to print to pdf single pages, each is 2 pages, extra balk due to margin settings. You can either select just to print page 1, used to do that but have now script that removes the 2nd page using a pdftk script. Ghostscipt is ten used to join the pages in a single pdf file, half the size of doing the same with Adobe Acrobat. This is now a single bash shell script of about 15 lines that takes about a minute to run. Same basic method works on the Model Engineer flash version, but in my experience the best result is Win10 using Chrome. A similar bash script can then be used in cygwin under Windows.

Thread: Myford 33t and 34t gears for metric threads |
30/01/2019 13:49:41 |
Have just sent RDG an email about the 34 tooth gears. If others contact them as well they may get a batch made. If anyone knows anywhere else that can cut a batch, then please approach them. |
30/01/2019 13:31:17 |
Another radical suggestion is someone approaching RDG, or Myford, about gettign a batch of 34 tooth change wheels made. Certainly RDG had some about 6 months ago. |
Thread: Countersink choices |
30/01/2019 13:22:50 |
Single flute can be used in a hand drill. Cross hole good for deburring and counting sinking, limited hole size per countersink. Problem sharpening if necessary. Can use in hand drill. 3 Flute, needs to be using in a lathe, mill or drill press to produce a good countersink.

Yes printing of the archives does not work any more. The flash option used to have a print option when you clicked on a page. Even though I am pleased to see flash disappear, it would be good to be able to print a page or 2 as required. One stept forward, 2 steps back by removing a feature. For current issues I usually use the PocketMags Web sitewith Chrome. Reading in the archives here I only usually use for archives, or when PocketMags has subscription problems.

I print to PDF using the Chrome save to file (PDF) as the option, no margins.

I read and print (as required) using Chrome under Linux (Debian 9.4). Firefox works fine for reading but the printing has issues.

If the hole you drilled is too big to take a 1/4" BSF tap, you can use a 1/4"thread insert such as a Helicoil. The thread inserts an be used to convert a 1/4" BSF thread to M6. The tap drill fro an M6 insert it 6.3mm, from memory. I have looked at this option several times as it is almost impossible to obtain 1/4" BSF in Australia. |
Thread: What MIG Welder should I get? |
17/12/2018 12:58:14 |
Look at the Duty Cycle, higher amperage welders usually have a better Duty Cycle. Also look at the torch. If it has a Euro fitting you can easily replace the torch assembly. I upgraded my old MIG because the liner needed to be replaced and you could not purchase a replacement. the replacement MIG has a Euro fitting Binzel style torch, this means replacement liners are available, |
