Thanks guys.some really good feedback. I will hold off and wait to see what the next cover is like. The mill I have is a Boxford VM30 with 30International taper (30int takes up a lot of throat space). Looking to make some low profile 30Int adaptors at some point. because if you put in a co-axial indicator or drilling chuck it will only fit if knee is all the way down and the job is low on the table. Even trying to put a spring loaded tap follower in can be a challenge.
Hi Michael, Have a look at the 30Int taper collets that I keep recommending to people on here. Link in this thread https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=146359 Edited By Nick Hughes on 13/12/2019 15:23:49 |

Ha, I did scan through the earlier posts to see if Goodwin had been recommended, but obviously missed that part in your post. |

If you want to retain your original readout, contact Darren at Goodwin Technology, to see if they could repair it. |
Thread: I just added 50 mm of daylight... |

Glad you like them John. As the collet face sits flush with the spindle nose, you've probably gained more than 50mm, but watch out for the drive dogs! As my machine does not have a spindle brake, I use an adjustable spanner on one dog when tightening the drawbar and then remove them before actually cutting metal. Mark, they are off Aliexpress:- NT/ISO30 Collets Bazyle, they appear to have the same grip as an R8. I've had no problem with cutters pulling out, in the 3+ years that I've been using my set and that includes a 20mm cutter. Edited By Nick Hughes on 25/10/2019 10:11:32 |

There are commercial plugs available for this. The drawback is that they need a shoulder to butt up against for the setting operation. An example are Lee Expansion Plugs or possibly a cheaper version Expansion Sealing Plugs

Thread: MT2 or ISO30 |

ISO 30 is great but you are then locked in to using either end mill holders or a collet chuck, e.g. ER type, on an ISO shank. Both of those, but especially the latter, project probably 40 to 50 mm below the spindle. I have ISO 30 on my little Novamill and this is a pain for some jobs. For a small milling machine, if you have the option, a better choice is R8 because you can then use R8 collets direct in the spindle - they are cheap, have hardly any projection beyond the spindle, and grip like b****y. ISO is more adaptable to auto tool change, but the benefits of that for amateur use are probably marginal. On my manual mill, a VMB, I have R8 and I wish the Novamill had the same. Hi John, I have a full set of these NT/ISO30 Collets They have come in handy a few times on my Syil X5 |

Based on my personal experience of a Syil X5 Plus, I would recommend that you keep away from them. The factory QC was non existant as you can see here (The Saddle fitted to my X5) This was replaced eventualy (took over 6 months), but I had to buy a precision granite square, to check and set the X-Y axis geometry and am now in the middle of stripping the Z axis, to correct the fore-aft lean in the column. The final problem is the lack of support, not from the UK agent (they appear to have the same problems getting parts from China), but Syil in China. I am still waiting after 2 plus years for a replacement board, that was faulty from the start and even after trying to buy a replacement directly from China and getting a price off them, they stopped responding to my emails.

Nice machine. I hope the X7 is built better than my P.O.S X5 Plus. I had to strip the X5 down completely to correct the geometry errors built in due to non existant QC at the factory! An example here, is the Saddle. Note the top edge grinding for the X axis alignment! No wonder I couldn't produce anything with 90 Deg corners!! This was replaced eventualy by Syil. I only found this (and the other alignment faults) after checking the machine with a calibrated Granite Square from work. Also I hope you have more luck dealing with Syil (Including Syil China directly), if you need any replacement parts, than I have (not for the saddle, although that was a battle, but I have tried and failed to buy some replacement electronic boards). Thread: Removing large flange nuts |

For my M/Cycle clutch basket that had the same nut and was both tight and recessed, I modified the end of a socket to fit the slots and used an air impact wrench to undo. |
