Another method in Alibre, is to Loft using two rectangles and four 3D Guide curves (straight lines in this case). These guide curves connect each corner (Vertex ?) of the first rectangle, to the corresponding twisted corner on the second rectangle.

Note that this may not work in versions earlier than V25.

Thread: Searching for bits - how to do it better ?

These are the smallest I could find after a 5 min search:-

ebay 9/64" Thackery Washer

Not listed directly on BA Bolts Ltd website (that I could find) for some reason though.

All I did to help refine the search, was to add M3 to the start of your "search term", but still had to sift through quite a bit of dross.

Edit:- found the listing , but still does not include 9/64"

Opie Oils

I've used Opie for quite a few years now, as they tend to stock some "out of the ordinary" oils and greases.

Thanks for all the information everyone. It looks like I'm going to have to do some more searching over here. There is a power station located in Krabi (not too far from Phuket) i'll see if I can get to visit. That is a very interesting video posted by Hopper. My coal is also running out but I've located a stock yard in a place called Nakon Si Thammerat which I plan visit so until then I'm using charcoal ( it's like giving a donkey strawberries ) any comments . It so happens that my route to Nakon takes me through Krabi so wish me luck. Regards to all, Colin

...

Steam Oil was/is a mix of very heavy mineral oil and tallow rendered from animal fat, designed to stick to the cylinder walls and valve chests of reciprocating steam engines without being washed away by the mixture of steam and condensate blasting through them.

...

I think the only places you might find steam oil are those still running the old reciprocating engines and pumps. ...

Hopper's description of 'Steam Oil' is incorrect, or at least old-fashioned! Unlikely that any modern oil has tallow in it, though it was certainly used in the past. Steam Oil in the modern sense is a high-temperature oil - one that maintains lubricity at operating temperatures >200°, and resists pressure. In other words an oil that doesn't cook quickly and lose it's effectiveness!

Not quite correct, Tallow is still used today:-

Going through the same process with the GWR Castle Class by Peter Rich.

Just correct as you see fit, modifying the easiest part to alter further down the line, in case this change causes another problem.

Also triple check everything around any issue you find, before modifying parts, as there could be an accumulation of small errors in other area, causing the problem (in your screen shot, there is also interference between the Crosshead slot and Connecting Rod side face).

For the 1/32" interference:-

Is there an offset in the Combination lever and if so, have you modelled it in the correct direction, or possibly mixed up the LH and RH parts in your assembly?

Nick.

Old worn out files are also another good source of material

Edit:- Suppose I should mention (before the pedants start) anneal first, file or grind away the teeth, produce the form required, then re- harden and temper.

If you go on to the Reeves 2000 Website and have a look at the 5" Gauge Prairie, you can view the individual drawings in low resolution. The far right drawing of the bottom row of four, has the brake gear. This should point you in the right direction.

Thread: What Did you do Today 2022

H Joseph,

It is more to do with the CAM side, rather than the CAD design and Alibre will still be my primary CAD.

I used to use MecSoft AlibreCAM, that ran within Alibre Design, but due to various reasons, this was lagging behind in development compared to their other CAM offerings.

They eventually discontinued AlibreCAM and because I had current maintenance, I was offered the free option to transfer my licence over to their stand alone VisualCAD/CAM. I took this option, so that I could have access to all the enhancements not available in AlibreCAM.

Although quite a Good CAD program, I have found VisualCAD too limiting when working with imported models, preparing them for CAM.

Alibre also has very limited surface modelling functions, so Rhino overcomes this limitation.

Bought and installed Rhino7 (Also transferred my MecSoft VisualCAM licence over to MecSoft RhinoCam).

After a few years of using Alibre Design, mainly to re-draw and correct the errors that i have found in the Peter Rich Castle Class drawings, as I slowly progress through the build (Shot of the almost complete Chassis CAD below), I expect another even steeper and frustrating learning curve ahead!
