No such thing as a Registered Owner.
Although Registered Keeper doesn’t mean said person is the owner of the vehicle.
Confusing.........you bet
The owner is generally the person who paid for the car, which could also be the registered keeper
Confusing........you bet.

Thread: Borrowing |
18/08/2019 11:38:06 |
I loaned a mate my work SDS hammer drill, told him explicitly that i needed it for a job on the coming Thursday, He didn’t bring it back, and wasn’t answering my calls, so i went and bought a new one. When he did return it the week after, seemed a bit miffed when i explained i didn’t want it back but expected him to buy it, for what it had cost me to replace. We are still friends, but he never asks to borrow anything these days. |
Thread: Home built trailer |

Please don't encourage people to do that. Acting in ignorance is one thing, if you kill someone when your trailer fails and it has a fake year plate you'll be done for a lot more than fraud. The IVA check is actually FREE if carried out at a suitable place, and if you use the supplier who sold you the bits you used to make it the worst risk is discovering a fault. Neil Take your point, however its a fairly unlikely scenario, and considering the amount of old nails been towed around the country made from old car axles and bits of driftwood, that were built prior to the test becoming mandatory it all seems a bit daft. Test is £70 btw, or was last time i looked, and test centres are few and far between, with long lead times. |

It’s like a lot of things, technically you need to comply, but who actually checks...... unless you were unlucky enough to get a tug from Vosa or had a serious accident, no one will check. There was talk of trailers having to have an MOT but it’s not materialised. Just buy a plate off ebay and stamp the date as 2011 Job done.
Posted by Plasma on 13/08/2019 22:10:29: Hi Martin. Thanks for that enquiry, ts good to have your friends input. I will wade through the guidance documents to sort the wheat from the chaff. I will check before I commit to buying the parts and starting to build anything. Regards plasma

Thread: Safety Glasses |

I’m with you Nick, hot chips always seem to get me in the neck, so a full face shield makes more sense.
Posted by Nick Clarke 3 on 09/08/2019 15:34:01: As a varifocal wearer I find it easier and also cheaper to wear a full face shield when necessary. While safety glasses will protect your eyes, in my experience their lenses (or a face shield) can still be marked by a flying object - but the face shield is far cheaper to replace. I look like Dan Dare from the Eagle in my face shield - so that may be either a disadvantage or selling point, depending upon your age.

Blank data plates are available on ebay.....you stamp them with the correct axle weights and the year of manufacture, but of course the 9 is missing from your stamp set, so you use a 0 instead

It’s the internet Martin.......par for the course im afraid. And are you aware how disrepectful it is to start a post with ‘Gentleman’ this implies all forum members are a specific gender, this could upset any members of other genders, or those who identify themselves as non gender specific, or as members of the opposite gender, or indeed some Myford owners, who identify themselves as a superior gender
Posted by martin perman on 14/07/2019 10:12:39: Gentlemen, I enjoy reading the various topics that crop up on this forum and learn a lot but recently there seem to be a lot of one upmanship, using acronym's that are difficult to decipher and even swearing, putting people down when they have made an opinion and arguing over sometimes silly points. Why cant we all get along and respect each others views or opinions without reducing it to written abuse. Martin P Edited By martin perman on 14/07/2019 10:14:25

Thread: Lack of Quill on Milling Machine |
08/07/2019 23:11:36 |
More than one way to skin a cat.......which backs up my statement that a quill is NOT just for drilling Posted by not done it yet on 08/07/2019 07:07:37: Posted by Alan Waddington 2 on 08/07/2019 00:23:39:
To those stating the quill is only for drilling, i would counter it also comes in very handy when boring, especially when power feed is employed. And how do you think I bore on my mill with knee, but with no quill? Power feed to the knee is just as possible as fitting to the quill. I might even suggest that a powered knee is far more beneficial than powering the quill!

Rather than rolling some flat it might be easier to cut off a section of tube, somewhere like metalsupermarket might be able to help. Or ask at your local pipe fitting stockist, they usually hold stock up to 6” dia, you might find a straight coupler that fits the bill, 5” schedule 40 is around the size you need, wall will be around 6mm |

Have had a few bandsaws over the years including a large industrial Startrite, All of the hobby ones ive owned, Clarke, Axminster and one i cant remember, have been to put it politely, ‘Somewhat Frustrating and inconsistent’ in operation, with plenty of fettling to be done from new. Recently bought a Femi, and can’t recommend highly enough, A quality piece of kit, just does what it should, straight out of the box, work perfectly every time, with no faff whatsoever. |

Thread: Electricity Supply |
09/06/2019 09:57:24 |
Interesting real world experience, however if we are all forced down the EV route, those charging stations you mentioned had better have hundreds of charging points, otherwise the queues will be horrendous. Even with recharge times of 15-20 minutes if they have limited charging points it would potentially take forever to actually get on one in the first place.
Posted by pgk pgk on 09/06/2019 06:56:15: Nigel: Back to some figures from experience. Cold wet winter at night using motorways (as opposed to tiny country lanes) and I'd still expect over 200 miles range. As it happens it's short trips in the cold on narrow lanes when you have to keep sowing down that when the car is 'less efficient' - but then probably an ICE is too. Nice warm dry weather and 300 miles is doable at motoreway speeds.
Yes, gov will find a way of recovering their lost fuel revenue - lots of tax ways to do that (suggestions include GPS based road usage, higher excise duty, huge tax on insurance premiums and so forth) Yes some EV's can tow.. model X is rated thus. Yes it affects range. Clogs: Paris to Bordeaux. Google tells me it's circa 360 miles with superchargers en route.. It depends on which model and battery size your mate had in his Tesla. If I was doing that run in my 100D I'd start by planning a full 100% top-up overnight (309 theoretical miles range) and then find a supercharger between 200-250 miles away if possible so i can hammer my foot down without worrying about range. I'd then top up to 80% charge which would take between 45-60 mins while I pee, clean the windows of bugs and read the paper. I now have 240 miles range to complete the journey assuming charge facilities at destination. If not I'd do another top-up near that destination.
Either car could do the trip non-stop in perfect weather if it stuck to steady 60mph on motorways with light traffic When chargers are more frequent and one can avoid planning. I wouldn't be planning if doing that trip in my aged 200sx... I'd just drive until the tank read 1/8th left and expect to find petrol within the next 30 miles. It is a guzzler at motorway speeds and 32mpg if lucky so the whole tank range is under 300 miles. I did a run from london to prague in it once. At autobahn speeds I could see the fuel needle moving and had to refuel inside 2 hrs @120mph (top speed 130)...My reflexes aren't good enough these days to drive like that but I'd feel a lot safer in my tesla at 120 (top speed 150) and even though the leccy drain would be high it'd still be lots less than the recharge rate so driving it fast and stopping more often still works out best time. Edit: One last point. If using petrol it still takes 5 mins to refuel, another minute or three to walk to kiosk and pay and a few mins to go pee. With an EV you get out and plug-in. The car deals with the fuelling, the charger debits you account automatically. It still takes the same time to pee but you can still argue a few mins off the refuel time differences.
