Thread: 3-Phase Motor Conversions: Are They All Hype? |
30/07/2018 20:16:15 |
+1 on the customer service experience from Inverter Drive Supermarket. When I converted my Chipmaster. They were incredibly helpful .I was a complete novice and they answered all my questions and helped me ensure that I was purchasing the correct solution. All for a one off hobby sale. I was a bit embarrassed how much presales time I took up. |
Thread: a new skill |

Like many others too many hobbies and work is still getting in the way. Did a couple of hedgelaying courses a few year's back. That's a nice rural skill to keep going. Backed that up with a chainsaw skills course earlier this year. I had a go at welding during my apprenticeship many years ago. That would be nice to do properly. The same goes for CAD.

Thread: Surface Grinder, luxury or essential? |
05/07/2018 11:31:23 |
Reading Alan Pickerings excellent article in ME 4590, he describes a surface grinder as "compulsory" How many out there have one and how often are they used? I currently have a lathe and mill and have not "needed" a grinder yet! |
Thread: Workshop in this weather..? |
04/07/2018 22:00:09 |
A bit late to the party on this thread, Workshop is a single flat roof garage. A couple of years back when I was off work, I insulated the ceiling and metal up and over door with foil faced Celotex insulation. Now the coolest place in the house. Shame I haven't got time for any time in there though. |

pgk, quite right that deserves an apology, made me laugh though. |

My nice brackets hidden from view now Nice write-up though. A lot of stuff that means nothing to me... Stuart |

One of my personal gripes is premixed windscreen washer fluid. 1) The container is much larger than for needed for a bottle of concentrate, more packaging waste All for a bit of convenience in not having to find a tap

Fascinating project, I have been following with interest. That gearbox certainly looks like a challenge! |

During my apprenticeship at Weybridge in 1965?? the site flooded when the Brooklands banking collapsed into the river Wey and flooded the site. The overhead crane hoists were used to lift the cyanide baths well clear of the flood level before the electricity was cut off. Not so well protected was the Blue Dip baths. These contained a sort of blue rubberised plastic solution that aluminium panels were dipped in to protect their finish before being riveted to the airframe. When the site flooded, the blue 'slick' floated on the water and wrapped itself around anything at the flood line - shades of Tory Canyon! The flood would have been 1968. I was there much later, only being 4 years old in '68. We are told that it was a very close thing that a major explosion was avoided if the flood water had got into the molten salt. I believe that they managed to cool it in time. "034 process" department was a fascinating place even in the 1980's. It was full of all-sorts of nasties. Chromic acid, cyanide salts, phosphoric acid, vapour phase degreasers, etc. |
Thread: Colchester chipmaster worm box removal |
21/04/2018 07:36:24 |
There was article in MEW some time ago (sorry don't know which #) that described refurb of the auto feed trip on the Chipmaster. Don't remember much detail, but it was enough of a PITA to put me off trying it myself. I think that author indicated that the assembly wasn't designed to come apart! |
Thread: Plastic Ban |
19/04/2018 13:56:13 |
Our local council used to recycle "flyaway" plastics, e.g. Plastic bags, food wrapping etc. Last year the contract changed presumably to provide "better value", but the new contractor won't take this type of plastic so goes it goes in the general waste. One the same subject, the number of food items from the supermarket that are double wrapped is annoying. Cheese being the worst offender. I know one answer is not to use supermarkets, but that is not always practical for those with busy lives. |

Very interesting project and thread, have been following silently. Please keep posting progress |

Thread: Lathe chuck not true. |
02/03/2018 16:07:45 |
Agreed, 4 thou ain't bad. It's about the best I can get with an admittedly old 3 jaw PB chuck. If I need better its either a 4 jaw or collet. |

This book is a fascinating read into the history of liquid rocket fuel development. It does get a bit down in the weeds regarding the chemistry at times. Some very interesting engineering challenges, as well as some very hair raising descriptions of when things didn't go quite right. Very sobering when you read of the toxicity and instability of some of the stuff that they were using. https://library.sciencemadness.org/library/books/ignition.pdf

+1 on Mikes comment of gold connectors. Spot on and reflects my experience exactly |

Never had any issues myself. Deoxit D5 is a good quality contact cleaner and is supposed to leave a protective finish. |

Pleased to be able to report that all is now working. |
Thread: Milling very hard steel |

I have the same Chuck on my VMC. For cutter changing, I tend to remove the Chuck from the mill and clamp it in my bench vice with soft jaws. I do like the idea of grinding some spanner flats though. |
