Thread: Spindle nose size
04/02/2014 23:51:19

These taper bores are generally machined with a relief inbetween the taper at the front of the spindle and the remainder of the taper further into the spindle, completely unlike the taper in the tailstock barrel which is a continuously machined taper from front to back.

Rob if its a D1-4 spindle nose it's 100 to 1 that you need a number 5 morse taper sleeve to reduce down to a 2 or 3 MTcentre

Thread: GH 1330 Starter capacitor problem?
03/02/2014 18:51:56

My chester 626 mill motor did exactly this last year and it was a worn out, ( cheap crap to start with) reversing switch. About £1.75 from Maplins. Suspect lathe reversing switch is not a simple rocker though.

Do our classified ads get deleted if they are on the list for longer than a given time as mine have all dissapeared?

Thread: Myford S7 jamming when using live centre
29/01/2014 12:28:22

I was confused when reading this thread until I realised the writer was talking about a RUNNING CENTRE as opposed to a LIVE CENTRE. If at first it confused me please consider others reading this forum who may end up with the wrong idea as to what a live centre is. The live is the one which is not hardened and sits in the headstock spindle, for the benefit of the uninitiated.

Thread: Huanyang inverter
26/01/2014 10:32:19

In support of the previous several replies to this thread. From an electrician who has been doing inverters as a fair part of my work for the past ten years. NEVER interrupt the contact between the output and the motor, unless you wish to buy a new inverter after you do.

Thread: What did you do today? (2014)
22/01/2014 21:19:14

Hello coalburner and martin. Obviously these machines are manufactured down to a price and whilst the quality is reasonable Myford or Colchester they aint. I'm currently doing remedials which are not curable by having replacement parts or a replacement machine, indeed were this route to be taken things could be a lot worse. There are no major horrors as yet but as I work through the machine correcting things to my own satisfaction I'm writing an article which Mr Clark may see fit to publish in MEW and this may benefit readers who find themselves in a similar position with Chinese machines.

I started sorting out the problems with my brand new Warco GH1236 lathe. Long story. Might turn it into an article for MEW. On second thoughts the way its going I could probably run it as a serial.

I used to work with a guy who, one afternoon got our large heavy old fashioned sack barrow out of the van, stood it down whilst he closed and locked the van, then picked it up and struggled to carry it across the car park and into the workshop! !.

Thread: Engineer tool auctions.........
07/01/2014 18:36:53

Reminds me of an idiot we used to push up bids against back in the eighties when Sheffields industry was being sent to hell. We attended dozens of auctions and a group of us ended up going simply to up the bids against the guywho became known as"the loony". He would invariably pay to within a couple of pounds of the price of a brand new angle grinder, drill, etc for stuff that been well and truly hammered in the factories. It cant be the same bloke, can it? Old grey and gnarled certainly sounds plausible thirty years on.

Thread: Repairing cracks in cast iron
07/01/2014 16:56:17

In the past I have successfully welded cracks in cast iron using coated electrodes designed for cast iron, by the electric arc process. On many occasions good results were attained without having to heat up the whole casting. It's a matter of judicious application of heat, avoiding cold draughts and not allowing the casting to cool too quickly. To date none of these repairs have failed, touch wood. This method may help with your problem. My arc welder is an SIP with a max welding current of 140 Amps.

Thread: Warco Gearhead 1330
01/01/2014 11:48:42

Thanks Coalburner, confidence on the up again. Am ready to order and take a chance. Am puzzled as to why lathejack didn't invoke sale of goods act based on state of NEW machine ,gearbox etc. There must have been a good reason I suppose.

Thread: Ahhhhh!!!! Trying to cut thread with die

Aldi tools. German engineering. Jolly good!

Thread: Warco Gearhead 1330
01/01/2014 10:49:25

Oh dear!!! Have just gone through "lathejack's" horror story on warco gh1330, and there was I about to order a new warco gh1236 when they open up after new year hols. Oh dear!!! Oh dear!!! Have I said that already? Surely they can't all be made to that apalling standard? Can they? He e e e l l l p! Oh no!

Thread: Virtual modelling can have place here ?
24/12/2013 10:50:16

Of course it has a place here! It's just another tool (toy)at our disposal. I may not use it(yet) but it is something to learn about for future development. It's grand. Just like any advance in methods of doing stuff, CNC for example or using electric motors for lathes instead of treadle drives. Luddites need not reply.

Thread: What did you do today? (2013)
06/12/2013 09:57:39

I managed to cut the stock to make the components of a DTI holder for the lathe a la Maurice Cunnington, MEW 89/2003. I then cut out the stock components for a bench grinder tool rest cos that's also another job I'll get round to but only now when not having one is untenable. The amazing thing is that I got all this done. The unbelievable thing is that I had that length of uninterrupted workshop time! Couldn't get off to sleep last night thinking about it and wondering if it happens more than once in a lifetime. Answers on a postcard. . . . .

Thread: Lathe run out
01/12/2013 14:24:12

If Warco can give nine tenths over that distance it's good enough for my purposes and then some! Looks like purchase of their new 1236 is looking more likely!
