Thread: Is a hammer on a surface plate worse than leaving a chuck key in?
19/08/2023 15:33:44
Posted by Circlip on 19/08/2023 12:00:01:

A Tech college instructor mate was nearly sacked when he gave one student a clip behind the ear for using a hammer to bash a piece of metal flat on a surface plate. This was sixty years ago.

Regards Ian

Add on another ten years and no one bother in that i was bashed over my knuckles because I was left handed but I shouldn't complain I been ambidextrous for many years wink

If there are any steam rallies near you or any place where there maybe miniature TE,s running go alone and talk to the drivers, you will gain knowledge and may find someone who can help you to be more hands on

Just to finish this off. I made one that would have been fine except it was blocked by excess solder, a second more careful attempt works perfectly and bending was much less scary than I imagined.

Thanks for suggestions so far Noel you ask Why paint galvanised finish ? Well as I said it's a friend of mine if it were me I would just leave it as is but at the moment it's very bright and really stands out

Visited a friend yesterday who due to his disability had some handrails fitted from his front door to his car, they are finished in a smooth bright galvanize his wife wishes to paint them but I suggested for her to hold off saying 'you can't just use any old paint' so any suggestion how best to paint them and with what ? My first though was Hammerite but then thought maybe needing to be etched first.

Thread: Good work with a worn out lathe.
08/08/2023 18:04:39

In my maintenance workshop we had a Colchester but the first lathe I had at home was give to me and it was 'home made' which I used to re-furbish a 2" traction engine it was a challenge at times but with a bit of thought and take your time it served me well.
