I cannot find the link now, but I remember seeing recommendations for long-life Cobalt M42 blades from Tuffsaws.co.uk I am going to try one next on my BK3. Andrew. |

Hi Mike, Did you come across this almost indestructible touch probe in your research? Andrew. |
06/08/2017 00:05:39 |
Hi Mike, You may have already found this very similar thread from 2012 **LINK** I have just finished making a Renishaw type touch probe that is a combination of the Shaun Wainright and Wildhorse Innovations designs (see my album): I cheated and bought the M2 ruby stylus direct from Renishaw (about £20). If you are interested in the design I think it is possible for me make the Fusion 360 files public. Andrew. |

Murray, I find most of your postings very informative and from a similar viewpoint to my own, so I was a bit taken aback when you stated that I was guilty of ignorant opining for simply passing on information that was not opinion or hearsay. I do enjoy visiting this forum, but I have seen too often an unnecessary level of hostility towards posters. I am thick skinned enough to not let this affect my use of the forum but I don't think this is true for all prospective posters. Andrew. |
Thread: Cutting the end off a carbide endmill |
05/08/2017 13:56:41 |
Hi David, I have used the type of diamond disc that Neil linked to, dry, at about 10000 rpm with a Dremel to gash a 5 mm carbide endmill that I had sharpened the same way Angus does. The disc made short work of the gashing and could easily have sliced right through the 5mm carbide cutter. Andrew. |

I daren't open the smart meter, but it looks like there is plenty of room for it to enclose for example a 43 mm x 32 mm x 21 mm 120A Johnson Electric Ledex EM100 remote disconnect relay. There appears to be a new IEC standard that covers latching relays for smart meter load switching IEC62055-31. The meter was installed on behalf of Scottish Power in Manchester, but since I changed supplier the smart functionality is no longer used and I am back to submitting readings online - what a complete waste of money, unless the meter can be firmware updated to be compatible with the new supplier in the future. Andrew.

When our Honeywell AS300P smart meter was installed I asked the installer why the meter didn't just use a current transformer for metering, rather than having high current tails in and out (probably for better tamper protection). I was told by the installer that the meter incorporated a contactor that could be operated remotely via the attached AM110R communications module and that this was to be able to carry out disconnection without the expense of arranging entry into a property. The Honeywell brochure does mention an integrated contactor, so I had no reason to doubt the assertion of the installer. Andrew. |

One feature that a smart meter provides to the supplier is the ability to disconnect the supply remotely (avoiding the need to gain access to the property). Just like with direct debits one has to trust that the institution will play by the rules, but it is possible to end up in a weak position if things go wrong e.g. following a malware attack. Thread: CNC controller problem |

The Conect relay contacts had a 0.1uF 120Ohm snubber across them to reduce arcing - similar to this

Hi Dave, I am doing a similar thing at the moment converting an old Conect milling machine to Mach3 with a UC300. Driving the DC motor controller with a 0-10V supply I also found that the USB port drivng the UC300 stopped working until a reboot. Since driving the motor controller by PWM via an optocoupler that problem seems to have gone away. You could try moving the jumper on the UC300 board and using an external 5V supply to improve immunity. Andrew |

Another supplier that some may find useful is this chemical etching company I have used successfully several times through work; Precision Photofabrication Developments Ltd **LINK** It costs from about £40 to receive a sheet of stainless or brass etc, etched to your own design supplied as a .dxf. Thread: Has anyone got any experience of Warco GH1236 lathe |
01/01/2017 18:58:07 |
Hi Alex, I ordered a GH1236 for the workshop at work about three years ago and have found it to be very accurate. Power has not been an issue with cutting 316 stainless or even invar, but then we usually use 0.04mm tip radius inserts designed for stainless, taking light cuts. I changed the motor to a 2HP 3-phase motor with inverter for slow start/stop with large delicate parts and easier threading. I would definitely consider one for home when I make space to upgrade. Andrew. |
Thread: Warco WM290V |
17/11/2016 22:36:23 |
Hi Chris, The WM290V does look good value with inverter drive and DRO included. We bought the similarly priced GH1236 at work and I later changed it to inverter drive which bumped the cost up by a few hundred. There were a few teething troubles but it has produced some very accurate work over the last few years. I would check that the power feeds are fine enough for your purposes, the finest are still quite coarse on the GH1236. I would not now be prepared to give up the Camlock D1-4 chuck mount for flange mount, but it depends how often you envisage changing chucks. Andrew. |
