A new board is £170 and a motor is £185

I think the problem will be in deciding which one is duff - or have to buy both!

Does anyone have control circuit diagrams - or at least close-up photos of each side of the board?

I think nobody has quite said what the fault is yet.

Peter - me too. I know exactly what you mean. I use digital about 95% of the time.
I find there are times when either has an advantage. Robert Atkinson's post was very interesting. The younger might be much more at home with digital, whereas the older are more at home with an Avo? I liken it to using a word processor - I can see errors much better if I print out - and I think that's an age thing!

It is amazing, though, what functionality and accuracy you can get from a 25 quid digital multimeter. Very good value, whatever leads you put on it.

We do try to cover all aspects of model engineering. Like many ME societies there is a bias towards railways but we have clockmakers, toolmakers, stationary engines, traction engines etc. and cater for all skill levels.

We try to be as friendly as we can. Like many societies we do a fair bit of drinking tea/coffee and eating Mars bars, but there are people who can help with most engineering queries. Yes, I remember the stuff - great claims of the power output - by careful selection of words e.g. using terms like peak power it was possible to claim the modules were amazingly powerful. We used to joke about there being average power, peak power and Sinclair power!
Having bought a small module boasting 20W audio power, looking like a heat-sink filled in with black gunge, I powered it up and fed it with audio tone. It lasted well under 30 seconds. I conducted a post-mortem and found gunge had got between the collector of one of the output transistors and there was little thermal conductivity.
I also bought a ZX81 with added memory module - the latter bobbed up and down at the connector and crashed the computer regularly.
Sinclair - I think he is a genius who produced mainly rubbish. I hope he inspired others. Take heart though, the motors from the C5 are great for motorised bogies for models.

I have seen these and right-angle ones on the Model Engineers Laser stand at exhibitions.

Cannot find them on their website though but possibly you can.

As a seller, I try to be fair and try not to overcharge for postage - mostly saying how much it will actually cost for transportation - sometimes losing out because I get it wrong. Any issues and I refund the buyer all his cash - it is not life-changing and I can't be ar*ed with it.

As a buyer I mostly opt for first class post if I can and often avoid sellers who do not offer it. I give feedback to acknowledge this. Unfortunately it is becoming trendy to offer free postage at second class, often with no first class option. A trip to Argos is not attractive to me to get "free" delivery (or for any other reason) when someone can poke it through my door.

Outside of ebay I buy from those sellers who post it first class tonight, if I can. Some of the big names in ME supplies have the attitude "we might put it in the post by the end of the week" so I only buy if I cannot get elsewhere. Some sellers are realising price is not always king and some of us want service even if it costs more, or both.

I too have had a controlled-temperature iron since I was a pimply-faced youth (PFY).

You get what you pay for here. Antex and Weller have produced good stuff since I was a PFY also.

Is PFY another candidate for the list?

I make NICAM 1979. That makes you at least 47 Neil and if it's long before NICAM.....

And still bright-eyed, bushy-tailed on Friday on the 2½in. gauge stand.

Well, the certificates are easy enough to forge and presumably the forger will get it right next time and it's no use looking for a hand-written serial number in future.

I suppose the only solution is to refer back to the originating club to check when buying, or have it retested.

The WSE is non-transferable anyway, but you might make a decision based on the fact the boiler has one.

Interestingly, this thread is focused on whether you can sue someone, rather than suggestions for solving the problem. Forget about the law - it won't happen.

I am with Neil on the focus issue - stick to auto and use it sensibly.

This is my experience of running a website and people sending photos. The more expensive the camera, the less likely the photos will be in focus - the operator is more likely to think they are clever than the auto and get it wrong.

Also take the point about other stuff in the background - sometimes nearly as important as the subject.

I think it depends on your morals and what you want it for - if you want to sell the copy then i think it's wrong.
For me, if you bought it and copy it for your own use then OK
If it is available to buy and you copy it to give to someone else - it's wrong.
If it is not available to buy and you copy it to give to someone else - it's OK.

That's my morals, not necessarily yours - and I am not saying I live up to my morals or what I do is lawful!
That said, it is very difficult to get permission and you will be lucky to get a reply. I have tried to get permission to publish on my website but no replies. I just keep copies of emails in the naive feeling I can demonstrate and show I did all I could.

Nick, you know very well I was not wanting that, but the point I was making is they are less likely to come back if they are no longer members and there is not an easy mechanism for them to resign.
