Photos uploaded. New thread to follow.

Ian, Les,

Thanks.

Geoff - SkyHook photos uploaded. Thread to follow.

Les,

Thanks for the Yuriy link.

Just what I've been looking for.

IanP,

Where did you get your iGaging scales?

UK 'agent' doesn't show them on their site.

Geoff - SkyHook Monopod needs a haircut, it's far too long for my low garage ceiling, even with all sections up the spout.

The knee on mine regularly disengages with its screw if I'm not careful when lowering it.

Not much space with the vertical head and collet chuck installed.

Note to self: Search for those 2MT collets I know you've got, and make a decent drawbar!

Assembled the painted SkyHook parts.

It works a treat in the OverheadCrane Unistrut, but grief with the new Unistrut I have just fitted above the bench, as it's been folded to the maximum minus tolerances.

Had to reduce the diameter of the 'runners' and grind away most of the metal from the tube above said 'runners'.

Need to make a concave plug that the locking shaft pushed against the InnerTube, as the existing narrow point of contact does not prevent the OuterTube from loosening.

Photos soon that will make things clear.

Geoff - Decided to call it a day after 'fixing' the SkyHook, as I was ready to hurl/break something.

12/11/2013 16:50:29

Parts welded up and part assembled.

My stick welding is either good or atrocious, and leaning towards the latter, with no in-between.

My O/A welding is good, but the rip-off prices means it's a non-starter.

The cheaper no rent alternatives look interesting, but those bottles look as if they won't last very long.

Can't beat O/A for heating, bending, brazing and welding, at least for me.

Geoff - Earl Grey then pork chops, veg & mash.

12/11/2013 14:03:58

Finished making all the parts for the Sky Hook, now ready to weld, assemble and try it out.

Geoff - Cheese on toast, coffee & a KitKat.

09/11/2013 17:14:25

Made good progress on the Sky Hook.

I'm adding to 'doubleboost's' design in order to use the OverheadCrane rail I added recently.

Should work, but will find out next week with luck

Tomorrow is day off with other half.

Photos will follow when done.

Geoff - Earl Grey now, with scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese on toast later, & dribbling already in anticipation!

Thread: Delay in availability of SIEG machines from ARC

Talking about high seas, reminds me of the time serving aboard the Frigate SAS President Kruger, having above decks (Top-side) out of bounds due to gale force winds..

Talk about rock and rolling.

We where all sitting in the gangways, Officers and Ratings, backs against one bulkhead with feet stretched out against the opposite one, trying to keep us in one spot.

Don't remember what the Bridge was like, but not pleasant I'm sure. Won't even think about the galley.

Those in hammocks had the last laugh though, as anyone with a fixed bunk just gave up trying to kip.

Geoff - Can't beat the navy!

'Fourpenny one' had a different meaning in our household.

Dad was always threatening brother and I with one when we wouldn't behave etc.

Must check to see how that expression originated.

Geoff - Coffee finished so into the workshop after loading bread machine.

Thanks for all the kind remarks.

I forgot to mention that there is a Photo Album up with same name as this thread.

My satisfaction will be if it helps anyone.

Bazyle,

I did manage to sent a post to the yahoo group, but heavens, it was the worse experience I've ever had trying to post on ANY group since I started using them when they first came into being.

Bob from the Group pointed me in the direction of 'tinyurl'. I'd completely forgotten about that service never having used them before, but always clicking on kind of link.

I'm concentrating on the SkyHook so that I can take a video showing how to remove the Apron.

Showing how it's done will be so much quicker compared to explaining in writing, as usual.

Geoff - Progress on the SkyHook going well. I've put the mockers on no doubt.

Geoff - Made a start on the Sky Hook

07/11/2013 16:54:52

The Worm gear gave up the ghost whilst parting 22mm steel whilst making the vice hold-down bolts.

Those mangled teeth cried enough and vanished, causing the lathe power feed to stop then start.

I have also noticed tight spots when winding the Carriage which no doubt I'd due to the slight wobble that Gear Shaft I initially bent still has. Just couldn't get it all out.

New parts arrived this morning from Warco, having ordered them 1350h yesterday.

Now if I had access to a second lathe, I would have contemplated slicing the gear off and machining a new shaft.

I don't, so that's academic.

Cannot decide whether to fit the new parts tomorrow/weekend, or make a start on my version of doubleboost's Sky Hook, as the tripod is becoming a pain in the whatsit and getting in the way now that there is a perfect solution.

Geoff - RedBush to the rescue!

Warco.

Ordered the two spare parts for the lathe yesterday at 1350h and they arrived 1100h this morning.

Thank you Don in their Spares Dept.

My write-up on removing the Apron and correcting the oiling problem is too long to post in one go, so rather than faff around trying to find the maximum numb of characters per post, I've uploaded it..

Geoff - Second vice bolt nearly done.

Neil,

Smart arse! yes

Absolutely correct of course.

Will do some 'reverse engineering' using a word processor or text editor.

In the meantime, however, the write-up in all its glory may be downloaded from:

Do I post it here, split into who knows how many parts, or just let anyone interested get to it from the link?

Neil,

Correct diagnosis, that is what happens. The slot looks to be the right size at 4mm.

New photo Album - Missing Sensor

Geoff - Bad night, but I will get into the workshop with luck later, but in carefully does it mode.

I am ready to post my write-up, but am being scolded as it's 3600 characters too long.

Dont want to faff about experimenting to find the total per post, so does anyone know what the total is please, as I will have to do mutliple posts.

Geoff - What a saga.

Thread: I screwed up!

Andrew,

I take your point re gloves, but I don't wear any on my hand/s if they come anywhere near power driven rotating parts.

Saw that YouTube video of that young lad being pulled onto the lathe when a sleeve got snatched by the chuck whilst he was using emery to smooth a rod. His shirt was being pulled from his body before someone had the foresight to stop the machine. It happened in less than a blink of an eye.

Frightening and a salutary lesson.

I followed your threat Andrew, but its way way beyond my ability.
