Hi all , the locking ring holds the chuck to the headstock , can't actually put a photo on the forum just yet....must learn.. headstock spindle taper:- small end diameter 66mm x large end 80mm plus a locating woodruff key with a MT5 taper inside the spindle..... as for the Boxford I guess ur ur adaptor just screws on the spindle......if only. it was that easy....hahaha.... I was hoping for something simple and off the shelf.......oh well...... cheers clogs....... |

Hi Guy's, should have thought a bit more....dohhhhhh my lathe is a square top...machine no...F2/70869 1969'ish.....def not a cam lock......the thread dia for the ring nut holding on the chuck is around 110mm....my 4 jaw chuck dia is a beefy 250mm...the inner head stock spindle is a MT5 fitting........times like this I wish I still had my S7 Myford.....ohhh well..... great idea on using a small 4 jaw but I think the headstock fitting will rule this out but will look.....was really hoping for a simple fitting and no chance of getting out of kilter with storage knock's..... perhaps I can find a hollow MT5-ER40 chuck some where ....I'll sacrifice the 30mm stock dia for something a little smaller........ hope this helps Clogs |

Hi all, couple of questions....
I have a Colchester Student lathe, and would like to use a ER40 collet chuck DIRECT on the headstock spindle.... ( I already have a nice set of collets)...
I would like to be able machine up to 30mm dia bar x 6" long (thru / inside the chuck)..... on the new collet chuck, it's not necc for a quick release or anything fancy, quite happy to use a spanner for release.......
Have looked around without success so far but was offered a ER40 chuck with a flange from Arc Euro...... Not quite what I had in mind as would prefer to buy something ready done.....mainly beacause the dinosour chucks I have are not that good and or up to making an adaptor for the above flanged ER chuck........ there is enough work ,so that to remove the original chuck and run without it isn't a problem......
I want reasonable repeatable accuracy from the start, better tool clearance plus the stock is often quite small and also because there will be little or no damage to the stock as most of what I need to machine is mirror polished... This is not for business use........
Any suggestions..... Anyone out there with a fancy 6 jaw chuck.......looking/thinking to replace the boat anchor of a 3 jaw chuck I got with above lathe....I reckon the 3 jaw original was swopped before I bought it, as the one I have was probably use by Genghis Kahn and his hoard's...... How do the 6 jaw's work out in real life.....accuraccy ease of use etc..... Are they worth the money when compared to replacing the 3 jaw chuck I have...is it possible to get a direct replacement for the original fitting ?.... Anyone fitted one to a Student....(Cant afford a better lathe before u ask....My lathe is in very good condition, I know it's history from new)......most of it's life was spent idle due to burnt out electric's..... I have sent out loads of emails asking supplier's for answer's but no reply's as yet (almost 2 week's)...that's why I'm asking here.....sorry..... Is it possible to get a direct replacement for the original 3 jaw chuck ..Bernard I think....(that's without using adaptors).... cheer's clogs

Hi all, not so long retired from the wind-turbine industry..... it all boil's down to the men (liberal use of the "men"word) in suits and the those in the overall's that actually know what works..... if you want something to work ask the engineers that use it....don't ask the salesmen and the bloody accountants.... I had the experience of having to explain to the management morons who thought and designed a new part for our latest turbine......the ides was good but they didn't think of how we would be able to do the bolts (60mm dia) up...no room for the socket......this part cost over £20grand......just scrap it and say nothing was the answer...... the money came from the EU development grant !!!!!!! in the job interview, this project is a team effort.....hahaha..... as alway's it's them and us........... cheers clogs |

Hi all and a Happy New Year, for those people with a skin condition....I really suffer with a dry cracking skin (all my life)...have tried just about everything to help as I never use gloves except 4 welding.....but nothing works for long... a farmer friend suggested that I try cow teat cream, used 4 sore teats due to milking and calf's...... it does say not 4 humans but tried anyway and it works a treat...... been using it for about 5 years with no female side effects....hahaha.... I can only recommend it.......I only use it when my hands get sore NOT all the time..... it's not expensive and a small tube lasts forever..... tara, clogs

Hi OuBallie, looks like u may b able to use a CVJ gaiter, (Constant Velocity Joint) these are available in singles thru flee bay..... the ones I use are a back silicone rubber, about £7.00, cuttable for different size shafts...as it happen these fits the majority of cars from 1960 to date......I've been fitting these for 5 years and never had a failure...... On my old car, 1928 Citroen C4, I use a st/st strapping clip, to look smart instead of the usual plastic tie clip to fix them in place.... hope this helps....any more info PM me .....Clogs.......

Hi all, please read till the end.... just last week on "Rip-Off Britain" a chap was interviewed about on line information.... this chap was high up in a forum dealing in top notch pottery.......the idea from the scum bags was not to get his money directly but 2 get into his computer......by getting as much info about him from where ever and his regular contacts, the idea was to get him to open an email, tricking him into thinking it was from a friend....."opening it without checking", thus allowing a worm into his computer.... be warned.......crazy world......stop the world I want to get off......hahaha........ ta Cloggs |

HI all, Hornets in the UK are quite mild and create no real problem.....Usually..... the Asian bugger's are a whole different kettle of fish....have watched them hover outside a hive and take the bees in mid air...... I moved here 12 years ago with 25 hives......don't have any now it all got to heavy, Arthritus got the better of me.... 2 stories of Hornet removal, here they are notifiable but the local authorities won't pay for the removal (like they are supposed to) so to remove or destroy a nest on my property...the nest was a tad over 18m up a tree, about 750 long and 450 in dia... 1st attempt, at dusk, emptied both barrels (12gauge) of bird shot, no bloody difference at all...just a bit of extra buzzing around.....hahaha..... 2nd attempt, joined three 6m length of 19mm copper pipe, on the other end used a ball lever valve with an air line fitting.... put 2 litres 'ish of petrol in the pipe (propped up on the step ladder) coupled up the air line and went up the ladder.... poked the pipe in the nest bottom about 6" then let them have it.....that sorted the buggers out....did have a few loose hornets but they had no home to go to..... the other job was in a very rotten dead tree......pushed it over with my JCB then kept driving over it until it was crushed....very satisfactory....... have just found another nest on the property, that'll get the spray can treatment as it's get atable..... loads of fun, " who said it was all quiet in the countryside" hahaha..... just out of interest it's warm 17.c and sunny.....honey bees flying well....I do miss em...... just out of interest, there's is a high rate of African cross bred bees here., wild and in domestic use...helped a chap out but in the end we just killed the hive...unfortunately it was just to bad to re-queen it.....shame...... used my last Epi pen, that's it for me...Hanging up my bee suit.... oh happy days....English summers, cream "T's" yum, yum...... have fun, Clogs |
