Thread: Drilling large holes
16/01/2017 18:01:38

Hi all,

I use them all the time in my Colch/Student 6" and both my mill's......I also use a mag drill machine quite often........

I use the R8/er32 collet holder in the mill and the correct mag drill bit holder in the tail stock, MT3 (I think)....

Works a treat, just use a slow speed (RPM) and plenty of cutting fluid.......

Thread: Convertion of table saw into spindle moulder
10/01/2017 08:43:31

Hi all, Jason.....

I see where ur going, I thought/assumed that ur going to mount the router chuck on the main spindle....i.e. using the r/bit horizontaly........

if so a couple of things I forgot to add, if the above is so, surely it'll, lengthwise be out of line with the where the table inserts go (also, induce wobble/vibration, even on my 3/4 ton Wadkin the spindle wasn't that good) and the other is the saw arbour won't raise enough to get all the cutting edge thru the plate......

My old cheapo r/table, now long gone did have a T slot with the sliding adjustable angle thingy....hahaha...grey hair moment.....it was around £35......

also, I like to feed the wood thru by hand so that u can get the perfect feed rate.......

my ally r/table complete with it's 3hp Hitachi router is not that heavy and is stored on a high shelf....I also have a problem with storage but this dedicated r/table is always ready for use.......I perfer to make shavings than mess about with machines.......

it seems a waste of time to disasemble the saw when a cheap option is readily available......mind I have seen some marvelous home made router tables.......perhaps that would be a good project to do......

I always fancied 1 of those American remote hight adjustment table inserts........couldn't justify the the high cost let alone the import duty.......

good luck.....I only want to help.......Clogs........

Hi Mike,

I like ur style BUT......

first problem I see is that the spindle speed will not be fast enough......I run my routers between 13-18,000rpm

secondly, better to have the router bit in a vertical position....unless you have proper control the work piece will lift and be unstable.....you can fabricate a hold down but they get in the way........

with 1/2 a decent hand router mounted to a cheapo router table works quite well, less than a £100 would buy a used router with 1/2" and 1/4" collets and a new table.......

You must think of safety....do it the proper way......cheaper in the long run.........

Thread: counter shaft not running true
04/01/2017 17:38:18

Hi all, prob to late to comment

all my machines except the Bridgeport are mounted to heavy gauge 4"x2" box, welded as a frame with 12mm adjustment bolts.......these bolts have 10mm thick washer cut from 50mm stock welded on the head and a nut welded inside the box before the frame was welded......cheap simple and effective......so with a lock nut u can take care of any discrepancies with the floor........

hope this helps.......

Thread: Air quick fit coupling dimensions
02/01/2017 17:12:08

Hi all,

out of interest are u thinking of making ur own fittings........?

I've been using a Swedish brand of fitting so long that I can't read the name anymore......still not leaking(20 years)

My point is that these male fitting are very hard, as in when I droped my 1/2" air gun the other day it shattered.....

I did get some beutiful brass ones, they were OK on blow guns and the like but air wrenches just vibrated them untill they wore away and leaked......

when I finally move I intend to buy a whole new set and some extras and donate the old ones to friend.....

Cheap fittings don't work, well at least not for long and mine get used every day....incidentally they are 8mm i.d.

the soft/cheap steel fittings just ruin the "o" rings very quickly........I normally pay £8-10 per female fitting and around £2 - 2,50 per male.....

hope this helps.......buy the best once and forget........

A good New Year to all.......Clogs

Thread: Maneuvering a 7¼ gauge loco.
30/12/2016 18:10:28

Hi Dennis,

I hope I'm as active as u when I get there, not to many years to go........

seems to me ur battling a very sticky wicket, with the w/shop door in the wrong place in regard to the house steps etc and the cupboards in the w/shop........

How about a small door, wide enough for ur trolley under what looks like a window next to the original door, not sure on floor levels but looks close enough to get u on the patio with only a small slope.....u may loose a cupboard inside the shop but a small price to pay for safety and ease of use......supose the chimney stack can slip off if short on hight......

This way u keep the original door and enough room to move about.....plus it won't cost to much........

.sorry can't be more helpful.....Clogs......

good luck to you and be careful.........Clogs......

Thread: Quill bearing temperature
21/12/2016 18:51:19

Hi John,

I'm sure somebody will say different but I'd be looking to replace them (all).....for me, I would say this is a warning that all's not well..........they may run 10mins this time then 8mins next time.....and so on......

European bearings are never that expensive, it'll be cheaper to change them in the long run.....besides they prob have done a million mile already..........

Just think of the damage that will be done to shafts and or housings if the bearing locks-up......

bin em and sleep easy..........Clogs
