Thread: Engineering tuition recommendations

The other option is to find a mentor who is prepared to share his skills. I have been lucky I have friend who lives 15 minutes away a very skilled engineer who spent his life as an engineer and designer.

You will also find people who are prepared to help in specialist areas of your hobby and share their skills and knowledge.

09/03/2022 16:02:59

My father was a working clockmaker and made predominantly skeleton clocks from the simple to orrery,s in batches of 5.

When he died his tools were shared out between us three brothers, as part of my lot I got a ball pien hammer with a short handle it’s turned out to be the go to hammer easy to handle and heavy enough to do what’s needed.

Yes it’s normal, adjust then tighten check centre height of the tool if wrong repeat until right. You will soon get the hang of it. Once the tool holder is set for that tool it stays that way. Don’t forget to lock the adjuster.

I use 8.8 and 12.9 regularly sharp hss works well and if you want a really good finish do as Jason B says. Use good quality bolts as a source of material and the same goes for the inserts if you use them.

Thread: Shock at low pay for high skill
13/07/2021 08:42:03

We had a vacancy for a maintenance engineer apprenticeship in a plastics factory. Three budding hopefuls turned up all similar academically, the practical test was to wire a 3 pin plug complete with wiring diagram attached. Only one managed it and he got the live and the negative the wrong way round but he did spot it in the end. He got the job.

If you have a look at the Expermental Flash Steam book, on page 171 you will see a drawing of F Jutton,s engine as part of the piston valve it includes to allow the engine to exhaust on the up stroke. It’s quite an interesting engine with the quick return motion to the piston valve.

Have a look at Frank Jutton,s flash steam engine for TNT that has a piston valve and from memory it has a pressure relief as part of the piston valve. It’s detailed in Experimental Flash Steam book. I have built his engine but struggled with the piston valve seizing. I now have his boat TNT and power plant.

To solve the seizing problem I built a poppet valve engine, my steam was hot it turned the top of the engine blue.
