Thread: Newbie sourcing milling machine projects.

I am sure you could make the simple oscillating engines on a milling machine with a rotary table. I spend a lot more time on my milling machine than the lathe.

Good quality HSS drills slow speed and a cutting lubricant will do the job.

Thread: Cheap alternative to replacement Record hardened jaw plates?
07/06/2015 12:24:35

My father was a clockmaker and his record vice had smooth case hardened mild steel jaws, I have this vice and certainly don't miss the serrations of conventional vice jaws and for most jobs you don't need soft jaws and when you do cardboard is usually adequate.

Thread: What rotary table
04/06/2015 13:01:44

Thanks for all the responses, I have bought an 8" Grafton rotary table off a well known auction site. From the pictures it looks OK the table is undamaged just missing the handles the screw in bit with a knob on, seller say good condition and can return at his cost, just have to wait and see what I get half the price of the Chinese ones. It's got 4 slots!

The only advantage I can see with 3 slots is you can fit a 3 jaw chuck without an adaptor plate so no loss height.

.

But a three-jaw on a rotary table is heading towards 'chocolate fireguard' territory:

Get a slim four-jaw with through-holes for front fixing.

Most of the work on my existing rotary table is round, I just centre the work by moving the chuck on the table generally only a few thou. I can see the advantage of a 4 jaw chuck for some applications.

I am planning to buy an 8 inch rotary table and have a choice between a Soba or Vertex one has 3 slots on the table and the other 4. Any recommendations?

Thread: Removing paint
22/09/2014 09:24:41

I want to strip the paint from a fibre glass tether car body I would like to use chemicals but they must not attack the fibre glass any ideas I don't really fancy rubbing it down with wet and dry.

Are their any options

Thanks Oliver

Thread: Warco cutter grinder

I have one of these machines and have sharpened both end mills and slot drills sharpening the flutes is not easy as it is difficult to get a smooth action as you grind them I keep trying various modifications getting better but not there yet.

I also bought the drill sharpening attachment its not very well made and does not appear to be capable of the precision required to sharpen a drill. Having said that that I cannot make sense of the instructions, so at the moment I have admitted defeat with drill sharpening. I tend to use a lot of small drills up to 6mm when they are blunt I replace them.

It has been used for the final grinding of D bits and other cutters.

Would I buy one with hindsight yes but it does not see much use about once every couple of months and I have a session sharpening milling cutters.

Like you I am making pistons but for tether car engines of 2.5cc I have just bought some bar to do my 10cc enngines. To get the final fit right it is by feel rather than measurement. I have been considering lapping to remove the last little bit of material almost a polishing operation. I have had my top slide set over but at a much greater angle I will try your method it may get rid of the need to lap.
