Thread: Manufacturers lathe stand v making your own? |
18/08/2022 15:20:05 |
Approx 10 years ago I bought a new Crusader lathe from Chester - put it on my existing bench and have stored the base parts safely ever since, not even opened the boxes the cabinets came in.. Think one part contains a suds pump. If it helps anyone £100 collection only from Aylesbury Bucks, |
Thread: surface grinder |

Apologies Sorry I was trying to offer a quick available representative alternative to a new buy and a price/value comparison. I also believe many of us have equipment we no longer really want-would like to see it go to a good home and be used more - but not, and this certainly includes me, actively looking to sell anything. To confirm and is sum of my knowledge- The machine is single phase, the table goes up/down, left right, in and out , cast hood over the wheel, motor in the base and provides a ground finish. An Arkadia.from the attached label this may just be a manufacturers label not the 'model' of surface grinder. Best Regards to all and apologies to anyone offended by my thread diversion.. Pete- Back to the shed.

All, Further to this mornings for sale offer, typed quickly as a part was heating in oven, and wife due back Arkadia on large plate attached to surface grinder- must have wiped it a hundred times but this morning was sure it was unbadged- an age thing? Wiped it more often than used it- but it does make a job fit/look nice! The link below is a brother to my machine NOT my actual machine but does look identical! Most messages talk about - how to move it - a hatchback car plus enthusiasm and few heavy bits easily removed. Easy to load this end. Actual base area about 18 inch square. My big question -been my 'work in progress table for many years- a tidy up may be required! Collection only from Aylesbury but will help load/remove bits etc.. Pete

All, I have a small free standing surface grinder 'buried' under other projects in the shed! works well but little used by me. real old iron, (splits for transport and actually has heavy duty castors on it). Has a mag chuck about 10 inch long by 4 inch wide. Based in Aylesbury Bucks - welcome to view. £400 starting point for coffee and discussion |

Ian, Donuts- I have found a pack of donuts for the workshop crew ensures ongoing plentiful supply of offcuts- stuff they would bin normally but so valuable to us. What do others maintain 'communications' with? Pete- retired and wishes he had stockpiled -even more scrap! |

Hello James (Sorry to others for thread drift) Thought I was an isolated island of madness! (Near The New Zealand) Although partly written tongue in cheek I really am looking for a box about the size of an AVO or slightly larger - think desk top PC as maximum although experience of actual PC cases is -never quite suitable.. But for COVID and my shed is COLD I would welcome you for a coffee now - hopefully sooner rather than later! Pete

This thread means another AVO,(now considered 'valuable' asset?) will sit on a shelf even longer- pre Christmas I had eyed up the old and dusty AVO for the cases potential to house a 180 v DC power supply for a CNC machine - a 2021 project - and recycling at its best! Downside suitable project box now required at minimal £s and 'currently ' no car boot sales or autojumbles to shop at. full of goodies I can't 'resist'! I really find trips to the 'local dump' quite challenging so many things I could rebuild/modify or just put on a shelf! Any alternative suggestions/donations/swaps (Watts) out there? That needs a new 'ohm' Near Aylesbury/deliverable in tier 4 times. Happy New Year and keep safe From 'Two AVO's ' Pete

Thread: Cabinets |
11/05/2020 09:43:08 |
Not sure if this helps; I have a new Chester lathe base consists of two grey cabinets, top tray and splash back from a Crusader. Splash back is cream colour -I think? Cabinets still in original cardboard packing-never opened as I put lathe on a bench and it will not move from there in my lifetime! Tray and splash back been stood in corner for 6 years so handling marks. I think ,but not sure ,there is a suds pump in one of the cabinets. Whats it worth- £120 BUT needs collecting from Aylesbury Bucks - can probably be loaded in car easy enough by one person as in You or ME but not both of us for obvious reasons! Best Regards, stay safe Pete

Hello, Just a thought - if it is only a very occasional or one off requirement then I, or an other enthusiast local to you, with a slightly better equipped shed/workshop could do the job or allow you to do the job (under supervision- we tend to be precious about our tools). I'm Bucks based so if you are local - I'm offering. From this you may also see how others work/get by. And in this modern age it is still - good to actually meet like minded people and talk! Pete P.S. Risk assessment, liability etc. are all topics for another time. |

Thread: Denford Novamill |
04/02/2020 19:40:38 |
Mike, Welcome! Pre - recent retirement and following an engineering career, I provided apprentice training and assessment for a few years in the engineering workshops of local ( Bucks) industry, any and all exposure to 'making things' in school is to be applauded in preparation for considering these career options. I am well aware how hard it is to produce 'interesting student projects' particularly for groups of learners and as an example the most popular with learners was the -desk holder for the mobile phone. The holder could be in a variety of materials and production methods. (Not actually a V block but required similar skills.) Like others I would be interested in the mill and pay a fair price, collection is no problem. Best Regards Pete |
Thread: Ally Pally Exhibition |
16/01/2020 22:09:12 |
On the basis of use it or lose it - I attend the two exhibitions relatively local to me each year, Midland and Ally P ally, like most people I grumble about cost of a tea bag in a paper cup- buy a (very) few bits but generally enjoy the day out and importantly recognise I am not the only person enjoying 'me time' in the shed most days. I could probably like many of us close my eyes and picture a 'walk round ' the exhibition BUT if I don't go I may miss something new /fail to identify a new project, so I and hopefully many of you will make the effort to support our exhibitions for years to come. I will be there tomorrow (Friday) and if any one wants to talk engineering from draw filing to bench top CNC- I will be the one with the HAT Fun Union Jack hat. - I talk/listen to all - in fact chatting in the corridor queue is another good reason for going! Thank you for the welcome. I have been lurking so long I feel I know some of you! I value all opinions but tread my own path based on others advice/own experience and limited depth of my wallet. Fancy a smaller lathe than my Chester Crusader for those small more delicate jobs. MOD trained engineering instrumentation/electronics apprentice over 40 years ago and been fortunate with an enjoyable R&D career to 'keep my hand in'. Most jobs these days for historic karts. Pete
