Thread: Building a car from scratch |
08/09/2023 09:43:59 |
Hi Steve, It all looks fairly do able until you start to offer up the bits and they don;t QUITE fit ! In my case an MGB engine and overdrive box into an Austin Cambridge estate ! I knewI I would have to make a special prop shaft and the exhaust was different BUT the gear box rear mount was 1.5" futher back and the top of the box was higher so the tunnel had to be raised. Your clutch problem, SO MUCH FUN when the rest say it CAN'T be done and you say OH YES IT CAN ! All of this was simple compared to your job, I just wanted it to work, it didn;t have to be pretty, what you did was beautiful. So many kit cars never get finished so to see yours was a joy. Best Wishes Noel. |
Thread: Compressor question |

Trying to use a pressure washer as a hydraulic source will almost certainly result in a receiver failure ! Many pressure washers run to 1500psi and some MUCH higher ! 1.5 X working pressure eg 150 = 225 psi Noel. |

Like Andrew I have all the kit and have had for 50 years. There is always someone who knows better than we do? And often tries to make trouble. Noel. |

metric Hp is Ps I think ? And a horse is a horse imperial or foreign ! I would fall for 0.125 Hp then the rest is about right. Noel. |

50Hz 1425 rpm 230v ccw rotation, continous duty cycle.. 0.53a is odd and does not tally with .25Hp ? 180watt would be .25 Hp. Could it be ex military ? Noel. |
Thread: TIMED AUCTION WEDNESDAY |
05/09/2023 10:08:11 |
Dear all there is a timed auction by MST auctioneers Honiton, finishing Wednesday, There is a VAST amount of gear that may interest some on here ! PAGE 5 of the catalouge has some new mini lathes, grinders, milling cutters, Etc looks like Axminster is having a clearout . I have so far only viewed half the catalogue, it as 23 pages ! You have been warned and good luck. Noel. Edited By noel shelley on 05/09/2023 10:09:28 |
Thread: The crumbly concrete problem |
04/09/2023 14:44:23 |
There is a school that I know of - which when built won alsorts of awards. Modern construction methods and lots of glass ! To look pretty instead of I beam, channel was used and then on the top face angle was attached to allow a brick panel to be built, some 25' X 8' ! The bolt heads would spoil the look, so studs were welded in ( ground flat) and nuts on the inside. Time passed, about 25 years ! Corrosion took place between the angle and channel and the corrosive pressure pulled the welded studs out ! The brick panel fell 10' or more to the ground (with the angle iron) ! The steelwork for this particular panel was replaced and welded all round, but the rest of the school ? Noel. Edited By noel shelley on 04/09/2023 14:45:14 |
Thread: Compressor question |
04/09/2023 12:03:36 |
By the look of it it could be 50+ years old. Before you modify it I would do a hydraulic test ! IF it proves sound then consider modification. The motor may not be large enough in a stop/start set up and it would be a good idea to use a Dol starter to protect the motor (correctly rated ). Noel.. |

Is the ball race in the rocker arm a good idea ? The radius is very small on the valve stem. Noel. |

Others have beat me to it Look out for a Nippy. I have used one for about 40 years. 3 vertical Vs and 2 horizontal ones. When I bought it it seemed one of the better ones at a fair price, time and use have proved it to be so ! Noel |
Thread: Help, my garden fork is........forked! |
30/08/2023 19:58:55 |
Take 12" or so of 1/2" or 3/4" water pipe ( old ) and drive it fully into an undug part of the garden ! You now only have to put the bent tine into the tube to the required depth and swing on the handle to straighten it ! Noel. |
Thread: Brazing & corrosion |
29/08/2023 19:13:53 |
Many cars and bikes were brazed together at the factory so it can't be that bad. Like Jeff I have used Oxy fuel to braze many things with out electrolytic corrosion being a problem over the last 50 years ! Noel. |
28/08/2023 12:06:13 |
Hey Kiwi, Your problem is NOT the braze / iron joint it is the heat affected zone and good old fashioned corrosion ! The heat has removed any paint Etc and the acidic juices are having a hay day ! A regular dose of old oil is the best bet - it will creap in amongst and do what it can - paint will coat the outside but any void or double skin will rot. Good Luck. Noel. |

Thread: Bell Metal - What is it good for? |
25/08/2023 22:06:32 |
It is quite brittle ! Best used to cast with. Recast as a bell, it should have a good tone. The history of bells and their casting is quite interesting. Noel. PS A trip to John Taylors Bell foundry is a good day out, the more so if you go on a day when their pouring bells. n Edited By noel shelley on 25/08/2023 22:27:08 |

Forgive me asking but you do realise that you need the depth rods for it to be any use ? As shown in the above post. Noel |
