Missing change wheels

![]() 8 forum posts 15 photos | I have had a Harrison horizontal/vertical milling machine for a few years and really like it. It is a good solid machine with lots of capacity. It is the standard version not universal shown at this link. However I only have 2 of 8 of the pick off gears for the gear box to adjust table traverse speed. I fancy making some to replace the missing ones. Does anybody know what the Diametral pitch (or maybe module size) of the gear teeth are so I can source the cutters? They only work in pairs so they may not all be the same DP? Also if anyone has a gear set can you please measure the O/D of them so I can go looking for suitable stock to make them from. I have the smallest and largest, 17 and 64 teeth. but need to make 22, 29, 385, 43, 52, 59, teeth gears. A photo would be great too. I know there was a thread on this subject in April 2011 when someone offered to make them but it went no furhur. Another less important issue is adjustment of the slide ways on the knee, the hand book is very vague, maybe someone has experience of this. Mine judders a bit when winding the knee downwards. ![]() 214 forum posts 24 photos | To adjust the knee slides you have to remove the removable slide from the back of the column slide. do this by removing the screws at the front. The gaps are scraped or shimmed so the correct clearance is obtained when the screws are fully tightened. (like the Myford saddle adjusters) I'll have a look round at home, may have a gear or 2. When I first got mine I ran that small motor on a 240v inverter. I know its 440v but it worked at reduced speed. Because the leadscrew and nut got so badly worn I put new metric screws and nuts in and made a power feed using a windscreen motor,so I still have the old unit which I dont need. I'll get back to you .. John |

67 forum posts 1 photos | I just found this looking for something else. On my machine the knee is _not_ adjusted by scraping and/or shimming. Coaxial with each of the screws that holds the keeper blocks on is a threaded tubular "thing" and a "wossname" with two slots for a "special tool". I sawed/filed an old socket to make the tool. You can adjust the coaxial parts such that the clearance is right when the keeper screws are fully tight. It's easier to understand if you take it apart and look. There are more parts involved that you might expect. I also replaced my leadscrews and nuts. In my case with ballscrews and servos for full CNC control. 238 forum posts 47 photos | Rick, You could also post your request on Homeworkshop.org it reaches a wider audience. DP = (N+2)/ OD in inches and you also need to establish the pressure angle if you want to match your existing ones it will be either 14.5 or 20 deg. 20 is more common now. Search on Methods to measure pressure angle there are several even printing out full size images that can wok well. Tony |
