Is there a way to machine the top of a dome with out having to file? The top bit above which you would fly cut?

The dome on my 040 loco is battered out from copper tube and looks awful. i would like to make a replacement. There is a picture of it in my albums.

If you can see the base it looks pretty bad

Cannot make out base in your pic'sbut 2 options firstly remake / fabricate or as an old mate of mine said once god bless car body filler when my angle grinder slips, I made one of his 7.25" Anna loco's
like the new colour more in keeping
