If you have a worden and have made the hemingway 4 facet drill grinder can you tell me what the results are like? does it really work for the whole range of drills as quoted in the catalogue? Do you know what the best grit size would be for 1. general lathe tools. 2.drill sharpening. I guess I would need more more than one wheel. I dont' use carbide tools much and stick to HSS for all general turning. Any help most welcome Regards Deric

I have ground 4-facet points on a few large drills just using a simple angle guide. The results were very a satisfactory. As the angles don't chjhange I would not be sceptical about a device working over an extended range.

I have a few ideas for a making a jig of my own

The supplied white grit wheel for the Worden is fine for HSS tools, remember it is NOT a bulk metal remover. Any shaping of a HSS tool needs to be done on an offhand grinder first.

For Carbide tooling then buy the diamond wheel kit and make it up. Again only use minimal removal rates or it will burn or clog. Average feeds of 1/2 thou seem good.

Using collets, it is fine for shapening the ends of carbide milling cutters.

One thing I have found is that the Worden table is not square/ parallel to the wheel! and you should check the rake angle very carefully against the vertical face of the wheel. Using a rather small angle sticker to set the angle is not too good and i will later make and fit a larger more accurate with well maked angles for easier settings.

As an aside, i have found that the clamping screws tend to work loose for some reason on the bodies of the wheel arbors, anybody found this and have a solution?

I would also like to see a 4 facet drill jig that will work on the Worden.

Clive

Message for those who own and use a worden.

When dressing the wheel for the first time how far do you go? The wheel as supplied has a small radius to the outside edge should I dress this away? I have mouunted an end mill and am finding that it is not possible to get close to the centre with the grinding wheeel edge, I have dressed the wheel using the diamond point but I'm thinking I need to be braver and take some more off to produce a sharp edge to the wheel and so get a bit closer to the centre of the cutter.

What do you think? perhaps Jim Whetren is out there?

Regards

Deric
