I was given an old good quality rotary table a while ago, its in good condition mechanically but the divisions on the handwheel aren't very clear. is there a simple method of fitting a small dro to read the angle ?

If you want inspiration for a DIY solution; have a look at some of the amateur Astronomers' Digital Setting Circles

Hi Ronan,
One of these devices from Machine DRO might meet your requirements. Alternatively you could fit an optical quadrature encoder and build your own display electronics. Another option which is not quite an answer to your question would be to fit one of Tony Jeffree's Divisionmaster controllers with a stepper motor.

I've just come in to give my handle-hand a rest. I've just milled 1/2 of the first of two cams using a rotary table on the mill. Just 540 cuts to go... if I ever fancied a division master it's right now!

DivisionMaster is a wonderful device; I have one, and it's highly recommended

[Well done, Tony]

But ... you might also like to look at this.
