Hi

I've just become the proud owner of a single lip cutter grinder by GH Alexander and my question is what is the difference in the make up of the machnie between a single and a multiple lip unit.

I should add that i understand what the different machines are for, put simply the single lip device can be used to grind for example the end of a scriber or a twist drill (using an added attachment), while a multiple unit can be used for milling cutters.

What I can't seem to visualize is why a single lip cutter can't be made to re-grind say a four tooth milling cutter?

What would I need to do to add an attachment to my single lip cutter to enable me to re-grind milling cutters?

What are the chances of acquiring additional collets? Do these have a special part number? If so any ideas what this would be? If I made some would free cutting mild steel be adequate?

Finally how would I go about producing a collet with a squate hole, for holding HSS lathe tools?

Many thanks

Brian

All sorts of methods:

1. Use a drill to make square hole

2. Rotary broach

3. EDM

4. Make the collet in two halves, with each half having a V groove of appropriate size

5. If the collet is to hold the HSS while it is being ground you probably don't need a square hole. A round hole, diameter equal to the diagonal of the HSS, will be more than adequate.

Items 4 & 5 are probably the most practical in a home workshop.

Regards,

Andrew

Hi Brian, I,v never used a cutter grinder, and grind my lathe tools free hand, but I would think you could hold a bit of square HSS in a round collet quite adequately for grinding. Just my thoughts, someone will proberbly say different. Oops I see Andrew has beaten me to it. Ian S C

Might be easier to change the spindle to one that holds 5C collets as square collets are available off the shelf, my chinese clone is so equipped from new.

It also has an attachment [ never used it ] for holding lathe tools.

i'll try to explain later what the differenecs are but it's hard in words, so I'll try to get photos of why it's hard to do multi flute cutters, it has to do with cutter length and using the wrong side of the wheel.

I am assuming that you mean that it is the version of the Deckel without the second swivel on the base of the cutter holding arm as identified on tony's page here: **LINK**

So the limitations of your machine is that you have a fixed secondary relief angle on your tool and you would have to put up with it on your milling cutters irrespective of the material you are using it for. I am not sure of the angle, someone might know.>>

I have the "Tool room" cutter grinder, and a set of imperial collets but made up a set of collars to use with milling cutters. Yes you can buy additional collets, RDG do them. There are also various copies of the Deckel around e.g.: http://www.warco.co.uk/73-universal-cutter-grinder, and I cannot see why the accessories shouldn't fit.

The instruction manual for the copy machines is here: http://www.northerntool.com/downloads/manuals/426245.pdf it should provide you with all the information you need to use your machine.

The idea of using a 5C sounded like a great idea as I have got a set of 5C's... However, I've just measured the shank diameter of the 5C's as 1 1/4", where as the Deckel spindle bore is only 15/16".>>

I had also forgotten that the "Tool Room" Deckel has a slide on the end of the pivot arm, which is why the various copy accessories might fit, yours has a fixed arm with only the spindle bore to play with: I would make some sleeves to fit the 15/16" bore and then look to ad a "click" if you are happy with the relief angle you can achieve.>>

(My machine has a reverse to ensure it is cutting in the right direction)>>

Hi Guys All

Many thanks for all the replies, by that was quick! Much food for thought here and I shall do just that, but enough to say many, many thanks for all the info.
