18 forum posts 5 photos | Hello all, I am trying to engage back gear on my newly acquired myford 7 lathe. I have moved the back gear lever into the topmost hole but chuck will not move, saw vid on youtube where they engaged a backgear lever on the actual gear cog just behind the chuck, mine hasnt got this lever so how do I engage back gear??

75 forum posts 6 photos | . Hello Dave I assume it is an ML7, don't know about super 7 but probably similar. Disconnect the back gear lever (lower hole). There is a little sliding key set into the bull wheel (the large gear on the spindle) on the left hand side which engages the smaller bronze back gear to lock the two together when in direct drive. You need a shortened 4mm allen key to slacken the allen cap screw, pull the sliding key outwards to disengage from the bronze gear, then tighten the allen screw again (important!!) to hold it in position. Then re-engage the back gear lever in the upper hole.

![]() 2376 forum posts 800 photos | Dave, I'm a S7 owner but, according to the Ian Bradley manual, on the ML7 there is a key in the bull wheel that is controlled by a cap screw. The cap screw needs to be loosened and the key slid out of engagement with the back gear pinion next to the cone pulley. The cap screw is then tightened to hold the key in place cheers, Rod
Edit: Too slow! The Super 7 has a semicircular key rotated by a small lever as per Dave's video. Edited By Roderick Jenkins on 02/03/2012 12:02:05 Edited By Roderick Jenkins on 02/03/2012 12:02:58 |

The files section usually has copies of manuals, parts diagrams etc etc. Well worth a visit, Best regards Terry |

18 forum posts 5 photos | Hello Nigel, might be easier with a bolt rather than cutting down an allen key, I wonder if the S7 lever would fit the ML7? Regards Dave |
