Does anyone have a copy of the article from the M.E. 4355 about the Northumbrian

I would like to see the first article before I try to order the complete set. Looked on ebay but this one is not on there

I am quite happy to pay for this if there is a way I can order it.

I have now seen the complete set of Articles from Model Engineer for the Northumbrian. I subscribed to the digital archive. In one of the later articles it shows a revised drawing of the frames. Has it changed since then. I have just ordered the basic frame material and was going to start using the drawings from the magazine before I ordered the full set of drawings.

Hi Mike,

Two other items I posted about on these forums when I was considering Northumbrian were lack of pix or drawings of the foundation ring area of the boiler, and no spec whatsoever for springs on the safety valves. Just mentioning it as you will probably need info on these areas if you build the engine.

For the safety valves, a while back Gordon Smith published several generic designs of "soft acting" valves for different scales in EIM magazine. They work really well. If need be you could Google these valve designs and use one of them for your engine.

Hi Thee
Drawing was changed in mag and on web.
It would be interesting to know what the full set of drawings show.

I can tell you that the drawings I have do not include the oil pump and still had the unrevised frames but they were a fairly early set.
Regards Chris.

Hi Jason,

Doubletop has done a nice job on his Northumbrian at the link you sent. There is a pretty good pic of how he did the foundation ring. Very nice job on the smokebox front and door.

One thing his pix make me wonder though is how he has his boiler fixed to the frames. I don't see any slip joint or brackets near the firebox as expected. Maybe he has just cut slots in extensions of the firebox plates each side and passed a screw through from the frame. Hope his smokebox is fixed to frames and the firebox end is held vertically to frames and free to expand lengthways (and sideways a bit too)

Best to ask him on HMEM, if you have any queries.
